About this Attraction

Nestled in the forested hills of Kamakura, Myohonji Temple is one of the most tranquil and spiritually rich Buddhist temples in the area. Founded in the 13th century, it is deeply associated with the Nichiren sect of Buddhism and carries a legacy of devotion, resilience, and peaceful contemplation. Unlike some of Kamakura’s more crowded temples, Myohonji offers a serene, uncrowded atmosphere that makes it perfect for quiet reflection and connecting with nature.

The temple complex features traditional Japanese wooden architecture, moss-lined stone paths, and a majestic main hall. As visitors enter through the impressive Somon gate, they are greeted by towering trees and the distant sound of temple bells. Myohonji is not only a place of worship but also a scenic retreat surrounded by dense greenery, especially beautiful in spring (March–April) with cherry blossoms or in autumn (October–November) when the leaves turn vibrant red and gold.

Open daily from 6:00 AM to 5:00 PM, Myohonji Temple is ideal for morning meditations or peaceful afternoon strolls. It takes about 30 to 60 minutes to explore fully, but visitors often stay longer to enjoy the calm and quiet away from tourist crowds. The nearby Gionyama hiking trail also begins close to the temple, making it a great starting point for a nature walk.

Whether you're a spiritual seeker, a lover of Japanese history, or simply looking for a peaceful break during your trip to Kamakura, Myohonji Temple offers an authentic and restorative experience. It's a hidden gem that rewards those who take the time to slow down and truly appreciate the soul of traditional Japan
