About this Attraction

Mount Hangetsuyama (半月山)—also known as Hangetsusan—is a scenic mountain located at the southeastern edge of Lake Chuzenji in Nikko. It is a favourite destination for hikers, nature lovers, and photographers seeking panoramic views of the Okunikko region, including breathtaking sights of Lake Chuzenji and the iconic Mount Nantai. The mountain is especially popular in autumn, when vibrant fall foliage colours the landscape from mid-October to early November.

Reaching the summit of Mount Hangetsuyama offers a rewarding view, particularly from the Hangetsuyama Observation Deck near the top. For adventurous hikers, several trails lead to the summit. Still, for those looking for a less strenuous option, a scenic road called the Chuzenjiko Skyline provides car, bus, or taxi access. This winding mountain road ends at a parking area about three-quarters up the mountain, from a 30-minute uphill hike to the observation deck. The trail is steep and natural, so proper hiking footwear is highly recommended.

Along the way, the Chuzenjiko Observation Deck offers additional viewpoints that are more accessible and still provide beautiful glimpses of the lake and surrounding mountains. The road itself was initially a toll road built to promote tourism, but is now free of charge and open seasonally. Visitors should note that Chuzenjiko Skyline closes in winter, typically from late November to mid-April, due to snow and safety concerns.

Mount Hangetsuyama is ideal for a half-day trip, especially for those visiting the Lake Chuzenji area. Its ease of access and natural beauty make it one of Nikko’s hidden gems for leaf-peeping, hiking, and quiet reflection amidst nature.
