About this Attraction

Sri Lanka’s coastline has stunning beaches, but Moragalla Beach, tucked away between Beruwala and Aluthgama, offers a unique charm. Unlike the crowded shores of Bentota or Unawatuna, Moragalla feels like a hidden sanctuary. My visit to this peaceful beach was one of my most calming and memorable coastal experiences.

The Journey to Moragalla Beach

Getting to Moragalla was a smooth ride from Colombo. I hopped on a train to Aluthgama, and from there, a short tuk-tuk ride took me straight to the beach. The moment I stepped onto the soft, straw-coloured sand, I realized why locals call this place a well-kept secret.

The Bentota River Estuary marks the southern edge of the beach, adding a scenic twist with its gentle waters merging into the Indian Ocean. The sound of waves softly crashing along the shore immediately put me into a relaxed state of mind.

First Impressions: A Quiet Coastal Haven

The first thing that struck me was the serene atmosphere. Unlike the lively vibe at Bentota Beach, Moragalla had an almost meditative calm. The warm and inviting sand stretched out lazily beneath my feet. The sky was a soft blue, mirrored by the gently rippling waves.

What makes Moragalla unique is the underwater reef just off the coastline. Because of this natural formation, the water remains shallow for a considerable distance, creating a calm, lagoon-like environment. It’s perfect for anyone who loves wading into the sea without battling strong waves.

Adventures Beneath the Surface

As much as I enjoyed basking on the warm sands, the clear, shallow waters tempted me to dive in. I rented a snorkel from a nearby vendor and ventured into the water. Within minutes, I was surrounded by colourful marine life.

Though not as expansive as in Hikkaduwa, the reef still showcased vibrant coral formations and schools of small, curious fish. Watching the underwater world go about its business was mesmerizing. Moragalla’s shallow waters offer a perfect spot to practice if you're into snorkelling or beginner-level diving.

Strolling Along the Shoreline

After my snorkelling adventure, I took a long walk along the beach. The soft sand crunched beneath my feet, and I passed a few families building sandcastles while others lounged under umbrellas. Moragalla might not be as famous as other beaches, but the lack of crowds made the experience feel exclusive and peaceful.

As I walked southward, I reached where the Bentota River meets the sea. The view of the estuary, with boats bobbing gently on the water and lush greenery in the background, was picture-perfect. I paused here for a while, enjoying the light sea breeze and the rhythmic sound of the water.

Exploring Beyond the Beach

While the beach itself was captivating, I was curious about the surroundings. I took a short boat ride along the Bentota River, winding through mangroves and spotting monitor lizards basking in the sun. The boatman even pointed out a few birds I hadn’t seen before, including a kingfisher diving elegantly into the water.

The river tour gave me a new perspective on the area's biodiversity. It’s incredible how this region blends beach vibes with lush, green riverbanks.

Sampling Local Flavors

My stomach was growling by noon, so I headed to a small beachside café that promised authentic Sri Lankan seafood. The grilled prawns I ordered were delicious—perfectly seasoned, fresh, and juicy. I also tried a portion of kottu roti, a popular Sri Lankan street food with a chilled king coconut.

The locals were incredibly friendly, often stopping by to share stories about the beach’s quieter past before tourists began discovering it. Many residents rely on fishing and tourism, yet they cherish Moragalla’s relatively untouched charm.

Sunset Magic

As the day ended, I was back on the sand, watching the sunset. The sky transformed into a canvas of orange, pink, and gold, with the ocean reflecting the colours like liquid fire. The horizon, with silhouettes of distant boats gliding across the water, was a sight I’ll never forget.

Reflections on My Visit

What struck me the most about Moragalla Beach was its perfect balance of activity and tranquillity. The water adventures, peaceful walks, and stunning natural scenery made it an ideal destination for adventure seekers and those craving quiet moments by the sea.
