Getting to Midigama Beach
The journey to Midigama Beach was part of the adventure. Travelling from Colombo, I opted for a scenic train ride to Weligama. The rhythmic clatter of the train and the breathtaking views of Sri Lanka's coastline set the tone for what was to come. From Weligama, a quick tuk-tuk ride brought me to Midigama. The short journey showed me the quaint village life and vibrant greenery surrounding the area.
Surfing Bliss
Midigama Beach truly lived up to its reputation as a surfing haven. As someone who loves the waves but is still perfecting my skills, I found the surf spots here ideal. The breaks were consistent and welcoming, with surf schools and rental shops scattered along the beach. With a friendly instructor guiding me, I caught some waves, and the experience left me exhilarated and wanting more.
For more advanced surfers, spots like Rams Right and Lazy Left were popular, drawing wave chasers from all corners of the globe. Watching the pros ride the waves was as thrilling as being on the board.
Exploring the Surroundings
Beyond the surf, Midigama had so much to offer. One morning, I hopped between nearby beaches, including Weligama Beach and Mirissa Beach, each boasting unique charms. A short ride brought me to Mirissa, where I embarked on a whale-watching tour. Seeing the majestic blue whales breach the surface was an awe-inspiring experience I will treasure forever.
I also ventured into the world beneath the waves with a snorkelling trip. The vibrant coral reefs and colourful marine life just off Midigama Beach were mesmerizing. For those who prefer land-based adventures, there are yoga retreats scattered around the area, perfect for unwinding after a day in the sun.
Culinary Delights
Midigama introduced me to the authentic flavours of Sri Lankan cuisine. Every meal was a burst of spices and textures, from the fragrant rice and curry dishes to the crispy hoppers and savoury kottu roti. The small local eateries served food with warmth and a homely touch, making every bite unique.
