About this Attraction

In Tokyo's heart near Harajuku, Meiji Jingu Shrine offers a peaceful escape from the city’s bustling energy. Surrounded by a dense forest of over 100,000 trees donated from all over Japan, the shrine creates a serene atmosphere that beautifully contrasts with the modern metropolis. As one of Tokyo’s most popular Shinto shrines, Meiji Jingu attracts millions of visitors annually. They admire its architecture, participate in daily ceremonies, and experience a unique blend of history, spirituality, and nature.

Built in 1920, the shrine honours Emperor Meiji and Empress Shoken, who played a pivotal role in Japan’s modernisation during the Meiji Period. Emperor Meiji’s reign marked the end of Japan’s feudal era and ushered in a new era of modernisation, diplomacy, and cultural transformation. Though the shrine was destroyed during the 1945 bombings, it was faithfully reconstructed in 1958 through generous public support.

Today, visitors enter Meiji Jingu through towering torii gates, symbolising the transition from the secular world into the sacred. The tranquil path to the main complex, lined with towering trees, offers a meditative walk where guests can clear their minds and prepare to engage with the shrine’s rich traditions. Open daily from sunrise to sunset, with no admission fee, Meiji Jingu remains a powerful symbol of Japan’s Shinto heritage and provides an unforgettable cultural experience for tourists and worshippers alike.
