About this Attraction
Nestled amidst the serene dry zone forest in the Polonnaruwa District, Medirigiriya Vatadage instantly transported me to a bygone era of architectural ingenuity and spiritual devotion. The journey to this historic site, hidden within a lush green canopy, was an adventure, building anticipation for what lay ahead.
History Comes Alive
Stepping onto the site, I was awestruck by the remarkable craftsmanship of this ancient marvel. Medirigiriya Vatadage believed to date back to the Anuradhapura era, was a creation of King Aggabodhi VI in the 7th century. According to the chronicles, the site flourished as a spiritual and healing centre, but like much of ancient Sri Lanka, it faced destruction during the invasions of King Maga. Rediscovered amidst the wilderness by archaeologists in the 19th century, its restoration became a testament to preserving Sri Lanka's rich cultural heritage.
The Forest of Pillars
As I ascended the 27 stone steps leading to the main Vatadage, the sight of its intricate design left me in awe. This circular temple, built to enshrine a stupa, is surrounded by a "forest" of columns that once supported a roof. The innermost circle features towering pillars standing at 17 feet, creating a mesmerizing symmetry with two more concentric circles. While the roof is no longer intact, the stone columns remain resilient against the test of time.
Exploring the Surrounding Structures
The Vatadage was only the beginning of my exploration. Adjacent to the main structure lies the Stupa House, which showcases a massive 33-foot-long Buddha image. Further, along the path, I discovered the Pichcha-mal Viharaya, a dual-image house that emanates a sense of serenity. Climbing a nearby rock to a small stupa offered a breathtaking panoramic view of the entire site—a moment of peace and reflection.
The Ancient Hospital
One of the most fascinating parts of my visit was the ruins of an ancient hospital near the Vatadage. The hospital was designed meticulously with two concentric squares of stone pillars and showcased an advanced understanding of healthcare. The highlight was a medicine trough carved out of rock, providing a glimpse into the medical practices of that era.
A Glimpse into History
What makes Medirigiriya Vatadage unique is its ability to preserve the soul of ancient Sri Lanka. From the stone inscriptions detailing historical events to the intricate carvings on the pillars, every corner of this site tells a story. Despite facing destruction and encroachment over centuries, the resilience of this site is a testament to the strength of its historical and cultural significance.
A Walk Back in Time
Visiting Medirigiriya Vatadage was not just an excursion but a walk back in time, offering a glimpse into a civilization that seamlessly blended art, spirituality, and science. The tranquillity of the surroundings and the grandeur of its design left me inspired and deeply connected to the roots of Sri Lankan history.
