About this Attraction

Stepping into Manelwatta Temple in Kelaniya, I was immediately enveloped by tranquillity and serenity. Unlike the ancient Buddhist temples I had visited across Sri Lanka, this modern sanctuary felt like a harmonious blend of tradition and contemporary design. It was more than just a place of worship—it was a centre for learning, meditation, and spiritual reflection.

The Majestic Entrance and Unique Architecture

One of the first sights that caught my attention was the impressive Buddha statue, prominently perched atop a raised platform. Visible from a distance, it radiated peace and wisdom, welcoming visitors into the sacred space. The temple’s architecture was unlike any other Sri Lankan temple I had seen—its design elements drew inspiration from Chinese, Japanese, Korean, and Indian influences. This fusion of styles set Manelwatta apart, offering a unique Mahayana Buddhist aesthetic in a country predominantly influenced by Theravāda Buddhism.

Walking Through History and Spiritual Significance

Manelwatta Temple stands on a historically significant site once known as Rajawatta, donated by Sri Lanka’s former president, J.R. Jayawardena, and his wife, Elena Jayawardena. As I wandered the temple grounds, I reflected on the historical connection to Buddha’s third visit to Sri Lanka. Naga King Maniakkitha is said to have gifted part of this land to Lord Buddha. Knowing I was standing on such a sacred site deepened my spiritual experience.

The Sacred Stupa and Relics

One of the most revered structures within the temple complex is the stupa, which houses sacred relics believed to be those of Lord Buddha and Seevali Maha Thero. Approaching the stupa, I felt an overwhelming reverence, watching devotees make offerings and meditate. The quiet atmosphere provided the perfect space for introspection and spiritual connection.

Fu Huei Memorial Hall: A Symbol of Buddhist Unity

A visit to the Fu Huei Memorial Hall offered insight into Buddhism's global nature. This structure stands as a symbol of unity between Buddhist traditions, fostering an environment where practitioners from different backgrounds can come together to learn and grow. As I sat inside, admiring the intricate details and peaceful ambience, I realized how Buddhism transcends geographical boundaries, uniting people in their search for wisdom and enlightenment.

Nāgānanda International Buddhist University: A Hub of Learning

Adjacent to the temple stands the Nāgānanda International Buddhist University, a remarkable institution dedicated to studying and disseminating Buddhist teachings and established by Ven. Dr. Bodagama Chandima Thero in 2013, this university is the first international Buddhist university in 800 years. Such an educational institution reinforced the temple’s commitment to spiritual and intellectual growth, making it more than just a religious site—it was a beacon of Buddhist scholarship and research.

A Peaceful Retreat Close to Kelaniya Viharaya

What made my visit even more fulfilling was the temple’s proximity to the Sacred Kelaniya Viharaya, another important Buddhist pilgrimage site. This allowed me to extend my spiritual journey, visiting two significant locations in one trip. The contrast between the ancient grandeur of Kelaniya Viharaya and the modern elegance of Manelwatta Temple was genuinely captivating.

Final Thoughts: A Must-Visit Spiritual Haven

As I left Manelwatta Temple, I felt a profound calm and inspiration. Whether you are a spiritual seeker, a meditation enthusiast, or someone interested in Buddhist history and architecture, this temple offers something unique and enriching. The peaceful ambience, historical depth, and dedication to Buddhist education make it a place worth visiting for anyone looking to connect with Sri Lanka’s spiritual heritage in a modern setting.
