Embarking on a journey to the Kurullangala Prehistoric Cave Arts near Ella was like stepping into a time machine that transported me to an era over 5,000 years ago. Nestled in Karandagolla, in Sri Lanka's Badulla District, this site is a hidden gem of ancient history and art that demands a mix of physical endurance and a curious mind.
The Trek to Kurullangala
The adventure began with a trek through lush bushes and rocky terrain. Starting from the Ella-Wellawaya main road, the trail quickly revealed its challenging nature. The climb required a combination of agility and perseverance, as certain sections involved scaling almost vertical rocks. Luckily, I was well-prepared with a knowledgeable guide, ropes, and harnesses. Despite the physical demands, the surrounding natural beauty and the promise of what lay ahead kept my spirits high.
Discovering the Cave Art
When I finally reached the summit, the sight of the ancient cave art left me in awe. The intricate drawings, etched with meticulous detail, featured various forms of birds, humans, and other abstract figures that defy identification. Among the most captivating were the grand depictions of peacocks and other birds, painted with an artistry that spoke volumes about the skill and imagination of our prehistoric ancestors.
The cave's layout added to the magic of the experience. The artwork stretched across a vast rock face, with some paintings placed so high that it seemed unimaginable for anyone to have reached those spots without modern climbing tools. Yet, these ancient artists had achieved the impossible.
The Mysterious Bird Paintings
The most fascinating discovery was the bird paintings on Pettigala, located almost 100 meters above the main cave art. The use of red ink tied these illustrations to the rest of the site.
