About this Attraction

Located in the heart of Kawagoe, Saitama Prefecture, Kitain (喜多院) is a historic Buddhist temple that offers visitors a fascinating glimpse into both religious tradition and Japan’s feudal past. Originally founded in 830 AD by the monk Ennin, Kitain was once part of the larger Muryoju Temple complex, which included three separate temples: Kitain (North Temple), Nakain (Middle Temple), and Minamiin (South Temple). Over time, Kitain rose to prominence, eventually becoming the head Tendai Sect temple in the Kanto region under the leadership of the influential monk Tenkai in the late 16th century. Tenkai’s close ties to the early Tokugawa shoguns played a pivotal role in Kitain’s development and historical significance.

A major fire in 1638 devastated much of the temple grounds. In response, Shogun Tokugawa Iemitsu ordered the relocation of several buildings from Edo Castle to Kitain, effectively preserving them for future generations. Today, Kitain is home to the only surviving original structures from Edo Castle, offering visitors a rare architectural connection to Japan's feudal capital, as much of Edo Castle was later lost to natural disasters and war.

One of Kitain’s most famous attractions is its collection of 540 Rakan statues, depicting the disciples of Buddha in a wide variety of unique and often playful poses. The temple grounds also feature a beautiful pagoda, well-maintained traditional gardens, and seasonal beauty, particularly during spring when cherry blossoms bloom across the temple grounds, creating a picturesque and serene atmosphere.

Easily accessible from central Kawagoe, Kitain provides visitors with a perfect blend of history, culture, and peaceful reflection, making it a must-see destination for anyone exploring the region.
