Nestled in the heart of Nagano Prefecture, the Kiso Valley (木曽路, Kisoji) stretches gracefully alongside the Central Alps and holds a timeless charm rooted in Japan’s feudal past. Once a vital commercial route, the 70-kilometer Kisoji was developed as a key trade corridor and later merged into the historic Nakasendo during the Edo Period (1603–1868). The Nakasendo—meaning “path through the mountains”—was a 500-kilometer inland route that connected the political capital Edo (modern-day Tokyo) to the imperial city of Kyoto. Unlike its coastal counterpart, the Tokaido, the Nakasendo offered a scenic, mountainous passage for travelers, merchants, and samurai. Due to travel restrictions imposed by the Tokugawa shogunate, most journeys were undertaken on foot, which led to the development of post towns at regular intervals. These towns served as vital rest stops, offering food, lodging, and respite from the rigorous trek.

Today, visitors can step back in time by exploring some of the best-preserved post towns in the Kiso Valley—Magome, Tsumago, and Narai. These enchanting towns retain their Edo-period charm, featuring stone-paved paths, traditional wooden architecture, and a peaceful, nostalgic atmosphere. Cars are restricted in some areas to preserve the historical ambiance, making it easy to imagine weary travelers arriving centuries ago. The scenic walk between Magome and Tsumago, a popular 7.5 km trail, allows modern-day explorers to experience a slice of the old Nakasendo journey, complete with forested paths, waterfalls, and tea houses.
