About this Attraction

My trip to Kirindi Ella Waterfall was an unforgettable experience filled with natural beauty, mystique, and the thrill of exploring one of Sri Lanka’s tallest waterfalls. Nestled in the central highlands, only 6.5 km from Pelmadulla on the Colombo-Ratnapura-Batticaloa A4 highway, this towering 116-meter cascade is a true hidden gem.

The Journey Through Lush Greenery

The drive to Kirindi Ella was a scenic delight. As I turned onto the Kuttapitiya road from the main highway, the landscape transformed into a sea of lush greenery, with tea estates and quaint villages dotting the route. The crisp mountain air and the gentle sounds of nature heightened my excitement as I approached the waterfall.

The First Glimpse of Kirindi Ella

As I reached the site, the sound of cascading water grew louder, and soon, I found myself standing in awe before the majestic Kirindi Ella. The waterfall originates from the Kuttapitiya Mountain and flows gracefully through 13 kilometres before descending in a mighty torrent into the Kaluwaramukalana Forest. Mist rose from the falls, creating an ethereal atmosphere that seemed almost magical.

At the waterfall's base lies the Diyagathwala pool, a deep, natural basin surrounded by thick forest. The sight of water crashing into this pool, combined with the vibrant greenery and the misty air, was mesmerizing. I spent a few moments simply taking it all in, marvelling at the raw beauty of this hidden treasure.

The Legends of Kirindi Ella

What makes Kirindi Ella even more fascinating is the rich folklore surrounding it. Locals believe that a treasure chest lies hidden at the bottom of Diyagathwala, accessible via a flight of stone stairs that descend into the pool. According to these tales, the treasure is yet to be discovered, as no one has ever uncovered it.

Another legend ties the area to a king who once resided here to cure a skin ailment, giving the site its original name, Kustapitiya, meaning "itch." Stories of mysterious sounds and fireballs appearing near the waterfall at night add a layer of intrigue, making it a site steeped in mystery and wonder.

Exploring the Surroundings

The area surrounding Kirindi Ella is a haven for nature lovers. As I walked through the forest, I was greeted by the sights and sounds of wildlife. Monkeys swung playfully from trees, and colorful birds flitted about, adding life to the already picturesque landscape.

The trail leading closer to the waterfall was challenging due to the slippery rocks, but the effort was well worth it. Although I didn’t venture too close to the pool for safety reasons, the view from where I stood was breathtaking.

How to Reach Kirindi Ella

Kirindi Ella is easily accessible via several routes. From Ratnapura, you can take the Balangoda route to Pelmadulla and follow the Pelmadulla School road through Narangoda to Kiuriwandala. Alternatively, you can take the scenic Kuttapitiya road for a more direct route. The waterfall is conveniently located near the Kuttapitiya tea industry, another great spot to explore.

If you plan to stay overnight, the Ratnapura Rest House, just 21 km away, offers comfortable accommodations and easy access to the site.

Reflections on Kirindi Ella

My visit to Kirindi Ella perfectly blended natural beauty, adventure, and cultural intrigue. The waterfall’s grandeur, the surrounding forest, and the captivating legends made it a truly unique experience.

Whether you’re a nature enthusiast, a photographer, or seeking a peaceful escape, Kirindi Ella has something special. As I left the site, I couldn’t help but feel grateful for the chance to witness such an incredible natural wonder tucked away in the heart of Sri Lanka’s highlands. It’s a place that will stay with me forever.
