About this Attraction

The Kegon Waterfall (華厳の滝, Kegon no Taki) stands as Nikko’s most iconic natural wonder and is widely regarded as one of Japan’s three most beautiful waterfalls, alongside Nachi and Fukuroda Falls. Plunging nearly 100 meters from Lake Chuzenji, this majestic waterfall offers breathtaking views year-round and is a must-visit on any Nikko itinerary.

There are two main ways to enjoy the waterfall: a free observation deck located at the top, accessible on foot, and a paid viewing platform at the base, which requires a 100-meter descent via elevator. The lower deck offers a close-up experience of the thunderous cascade surrounded by lush cliffs, imposing during the rainy season or snowmelt. For panoramic views that combine Kegon Falls with Lake Chuzenji, visitors can ride the Akechidaira Ropeway to the observatory above.

Kegon Waterfall transforms throughout the seasons. Autumn is stunning, with vivid foliage from mid- to late October, making it a premier spot for fall colour viewing in Japan. In winter, the falls freeze into spectacular ice formations, drawing photographers and nature lovers alike.

Located in the Nikko National Park, Kegon Waterfall is easily reachable by bus from Tobu Nikko Station or JR Nikko Station, making it accessible for both domestic and international tourists. Whether captivated by seasonal colours, cascading water, or icy sculptures, Kegon Waterfall offers an unforgettable, powerful, serene natural experience.
