A thin wall separates the springs from the ocean, ensuring the spring waters remain pure and salt-free. It amazed me how the water, originating from an underground source in Tellipallai-Maviddapuram, stays fresh despite the proximity to the sea.

The connection between the springs and the Nilavarai Bottomless Well, located over 10 kilometres away, added an element of mystery to my visit. The idea of an intricate underground hydrological system linking these two sites was fascinating and awe-inspiring.

The Legend of Keerimalai

The legend surrounding Keerimalai added a deeper layer of meaning to my experience. According to local folklore, a Pandiyan princess named Maruthapura Veeravalli was cured of a horse-shaped head after bathing in the sacred waters. She later built the Hindu Kovil at Keerimalai, cementing its spiritual significance for Hindus. Standing by the waters, I couldn’t help but reflect on the power of faith and the profound connection between myths and sacred places.

Getting to Keerimalai

Reaching Keerimalai from Jaffna Town was straightforward. I took the scenic route along Palali Road, with helpful locals and checkpoints guiding me. The newly opened roads have made the springs more accessible, and the drive was a beautiful journey through the countryside.

Arriving early in the morning was the best decision I made. The serene atmosphere and the gentle morning light made the experience even more magical. By mid-morning, the site began to fill with visitors, but the early hours offered a peaceful opportunity to fully immerse me in the springs' tranquillity.
