About this Attraction
Nestled in the heart of Yokohama’s vibrant Chinatown, Kanteibyo Temple (関帝廟) stands as a stunning spiritual and cultural landmark, shining with its vivid red exterior, intricate gold detailing, and fiercely posed dragon statues guarding the entrance. Originally founded in 1862, the temple was created when a Chinese migrant brought a statue of Guan Yu, the revered Chinese military general and deity, to Japan. Guan Yu, widely celebrated in the classic Chinese novel Romance of the Three Kingdoms, remains the temple’s central figure, worshipped for business success, financial prosperity, and protection.
Throughout its history, Kanteibyo has faced numerous trials. The Great Kanto Earthquake in 1923, the air raids of World War II in 1945, and a mysterious fire in 1986 all led to its destruction. Each time, however, the community rallied together to restore the temple, reflecting the deep devotion and resilience of Yokohama’s Chinese residents and worshippers.
Today, Kanteibyo Temple continues to be a cherished place of worship, attracting both locals and tourists who admire its rich cultural heritage and ornate design. Inside, seven deities are honored: Guan Yu, the Jade Emperor (symbolized by the ceiling), Di Mu Niang Niang, Zhou Cang, Guan Ping, Guan Yin, and Fu De Zheng Shen. Each statue is adorned with elaborate robes and decorations, creating a visually stunning environment for prayer and reflection.
The temple features a unique incense ritual where worshippers light incense outside and place them into five designated burners before entering to pray. Traditional fortune-telling with divination moon blocks is also offered. Major festivals, especially New Year’s celebrations, Lunar New Year, and Guan Yu’s birthday, bring the temple to life with vibrant lion dances, dragon performances, and colorful ceremonies, embodying the lively spirit of Yokohama Chinatown.
