About this Attraction

During my visit to Kandy, I had the chance to step into the tranquil grounds of the Kandy War Cemetery, which holds profound historical and emotional significance. This serene space, formerly known as the Pitakande Military Cemetery, is more than just a resting place for soldiers—it’s a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made during the world wars.

A Journey Through History

As I entered the cemetery, I was struck by its peaceful atmosphere, a stark contrast to the turbulent history it represents. The cemetery is the final resting place for 203 individuals who served in various capacities during the wars. Walking among the well-maintained graves, I learned about the diverse souls interred here—107 British, 35 East Africans, 26 Sri Lankans, 23 Indians, 6 Canadians, 3 Italians, 1 Frenchman, and two unidentified individuals. Each headstone told a story, reflecting the global scale of the conflicts and the unity of soldiers from different nations.

Honouring Sacrifices

The graves were meticulously cared for, with the names and contributions of each individual preserved for posterity. A special memorial stood out—a tribute to a naval officer whose grave remains unidentified. It was heartwarming to see the effort taken by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission to maintain the dignity and sanctity of this sacred ground.

Why Visit the Kandy War Cemetery?

Visiting the Kandy War Cemetery was an enriching experience. It’s not just a site for history enthusiasts but a place that invites reflection and remembrance. The stories of courage, sacrifice, and resilience are etched into every corner of this cemetery. It’s a humbling reminder of the cost of peace and the unity of nations during trying times.

Practical Information

The cemetery is wheelchair accessible and open daily from 7:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., making it a convenient stop for visitors exploring Kandy. I also took the opportunity to visit the nearby British Garrison Cemetery, which offers another glimpse into Kandy’s colonial past. The two cemeteries provide a deeper understanding of the region's historical significance.

Final Thoughts

My visit to the Kandy War Cemetery was a moving and reflective experience. It’s more than a historical site—a place of quiet respect and gratitude for those who served. If you’re in Kandy, I highly recommend a visit. It’s a chance to connect with history and pay tribute to the countless sacrifices that have shaped the world we live in today.
