Kamakura Daibutsu, or the Great Buddha of Kamakura, is one of Japan’s most treasured and iconic historical landmarks. Located at the Kōtoku-in Temple in Kamakura City, this monumental bronze statue of Amida Buddha stands at 13.35 meters high and weighs approximately 121 tons. It dates back to the year 1252, having withstood centuries of earthquakes, tsunamis, and war, yet it continues to symbolize strength, peace, and resilience.

Unlike many other large Buddha statues in Japan, Kamakura Daibutsu sits peacefully under the open sky, creating a dramatic and spiritual visual against the backdrop of trees and seasonal changes. Visitors are welcome to admire the statue’s tranquil expression, walk around the temple grounds, and even step inside the hollow interior of the statue for a unique perspective on ancient casting techniques. For a small fee, you can explore the inside of the Buddha and learn about its construction and preservation.

The best times to visit are during spring (March–May) and autumn (October–November), when the weather is pleasant and the surrounding nature is at its most vibrant—either blooming with cherry blossoms or glowing with fall foliage. The temple is open all seven days of the week, with slightly shorter hours during the colder months. A typical visit takes 30 minutes to an hour, making it an ideal stop on a Kamakura day trip from Tokyo.
