About this Attraction

During my recent adventure in the Matale District, I explored Kalabokka 360 Upper Division View Point. This breathtaking destination offers panoramic views, cultural richness, and an unforgettable outdoor experience. This hidden gem, often overshadowed by more famous tourist spots, was one of the most scenic and adventurous places I’ve visited in Sri Lanka.

From the thrilling off-road drive to camping under the stars, every moment at Kalabokka felt like an adventure from a storybook.

The Journey to Kalabokka: A Thrilling Ride Through the Highlands

Reaching Kalabokka was an adventure in itself. Starting from Matale, we drove approximately 30 kilometres, winding through tea plantations, misty mountains, and small villages. The road was smooth at first, but the last six kilometres turned into a rugged, bumpy path, requiring a 4x4 vehicle or a motorcycle to navigate comfortably.

For those who love off-road driving, this stretch adds a thrilling element to the journey. I could feel the excitement building as we climbed higher, each turning revealing stunning new landscapes.

Arriving at the Summit: A View Like No Other

When I finally reached the peak of Kalabokka, I was greeted by a 360-degree view that left me speechless. I could see Adam’s Peak, Bible Rock, and the majestic Knuckles Mountain Range stretching far into the distance. Below, the lush green valleys, rolling tea estates, and the shimmering Sembuwatta Lake created a breathtaking contrast against the clear blue sky.

The serenity of this place was overwhelming. Standing at the highest point, surrounded by absolute silence except for the wind, I felt an unmatched sense of peace and freedom.

Exploring the Cultural and Spiritual Side of Kalabokka

One of Kalabokka's unique aspects is its cultural blend. At the summit, I came across a small Hindu Kovil standing peacefully amidst nature. Seeing this sacred site at such a high elevation was a humbling experience, reminding me of Sri Lanka’s deep-rooted spiritual traditions.

I also noticed a few cabanas, offering a perfect resting spot for travellers looking to relax and absorb the scenery. Sitting inside one of them, sipping hot tea, I let the fresh mountain air and soothing silence wash over me.

Camping at Kalabokka: A Night Under the Stars

For those who love adventure and outdoor living, Kalabokka offers a camping experience. As the sunset painted the sky with shades of orange and purple, I set up camp, preparing for a night under the open sky.

The temperature dropped, and the air became crisp, making it the perfect weather for a warm bonfire. Sitting around the campfire, sharing stories, and gazing at the starlit sky made for an unforgettable night.

The Rs. 3,500 camping fee ensures the preservation of this natural wonder, making it a small price to pay for such a priceless experience.

The Sunrise at Kalabokka: A Magical Moment

Waking up to the cold mountain breeze, I eagerly climbed out of my tent to witness the sunrise—and it was pure magicThe entire landscape transformed into a golden paradise as the first rays of sunlight touched the valleys and peaks.

I stood there in awe, watching the morning mist slowly lift, revealing the hidden beauty of the surrounding mountains. It was a moment of pure connection with nature that I will carry with me forever.

Photography Paradise: Capturing the Beauty of Kalabokka

For photographers, Kalabokka is an absolute dream. Every angle offers something unique: the rolling hills, misty landscapes, or golden sunrises. The contrast between light and shadow, combined with the vastness of the scenery, makes for breathtaking shots.

Some of my favourite photography moments at Kalabokka included:
The golden sunrise over the Knuckles Mountain Range
The emerald-green Sembuwatta Lake, surrounded by tea estates
The small Hindu Kovil standing against the vast backdrop of hills
Nighttime long-exposure shots, capturing the starlit sky
