About this Attraction

Located in Mito, Ibaraki Prefecture, Kairakuen is one of Japan’s Three Great Gardens, standing alongside Kenrokuen in Kanazawa and Korakuen in Okayama. Unlike the other two, which were initially reserved for feudal lords, Kairakuen was built to be enjoyed by the ruling class and the public. Its name means “A Park to Enjoy Together.”

Historical Background

Kairakuen was created in 1841 by Tokugawa Nariaki, the local feudal lord of Mito. His vision was to design a beautiful space where nature, culture, and public enjoyment could coexist, making it one of the earliest public parks in Japan’s history.

Seasonal Beauty: Plum Blossoms

Kairakuen is especially famous for its plum trees (ume). The garden features over 3,000 plum trees of over 100 varieties, producing breathtaking displays of white, pink, and red blossoms every spring. The Mito Plum Festival (Mito Ume Matsuri), held annually from mid-February to March, draws thousands of visitors to admire the colourful flowers and enjoy seasonal events.

Scenic Features

Beyond the plum trees, Kairakuen also includes a tranquil bamboo grove, tall cedar forests, and the Kobuntei, a beautiful Japanese-style building for educational and cultural gatherings. The Kobuntei’s top floor offers panoramic views of the gardens and the nearby Senba Lake, providing visitors with stunning seasonal scenery.

A Timeless Garden Experience

Whether you visit during plum blossom season or any other time of year, Kairakuen | Ibaraki offers a peaceful retreat that blends natural beauty, history, and cultural heritage, making it a must-see destination in Japan.
