About this Attraction
Tucked away in the scenic hill country of Sri Lanka, Kadiyanlena Ella Falls, also known as the ‘Broken Falls’, is a mesmerizing hidden treasure waiting to be explored. Unlike the more commercialized waterfalls, Kadiyanlena offers an untouched natural experience where the sound of cascading water blends harmoniously with the whispering winds of the highlands.
I had heard of its three-tiered descent, but standing in front of it, watching the water split into distinct sections before tumbling gracefully down, was an experience beyond words. The legend behind its name—the ‘Broken Falls’—became clear as I watched the water break twice at the top and once at the bottom, giving the falls a unique, fragmented elegance.
The Journey to Kadiyanlena: A Path Through Paradise
Reaching Kadiyanlena Falls is an adventure in itself. My journey began in Nawalapitiya, a town rich in colonial history surrounded by rolling tea estates. From there, I travelled about 7 kilometres along the Talawakele road, which took me through misty hills, tea plantations, and winding streets with towering trees.
For those travelling without a private vehicle, buses from Nawalapitiya to Thispane or Talawakele offer a chance to soak in scenic beauty at a leisurely pace. Along the way, the crisp mountain air and the sight of glistening green landscapes set the perfect mood for the hidden wonder that awaited ahead.
A Waterfall at the Crossroads of Two Districts
One of the most intriguing aspects of Kadiyanlena Ella is its geographical uniqueness. It stands right on the border between the Nuwara Eliya and Kandy districts, making it a remarkable intersection of two of Sri Lanka’s most picturesque regions.
At 25 meters (82 feet) in height, it might not be the tallest waterfall in the country, but it possesses a charm unlike any other. The water flows gently over rocky ledges, creating a soothing yet powerful spectacle, its pristine clarity reflecting the untouched beauty of the highlands.
Why Kadiyanlena Stands Out
What sets Kadiyanlena apart from the more well-known waterfalls in Sri Lanka is its tranquil, off-the-beaten-path appeal. There are no crowds, no tourist shops—just pure, unspoiled nature.
- A Photographer’s Dream: The contrast of white water against emerald-green surroundings creates a breathtaking visual. Each frame captures something new—the layers of the falls, the way sunlight dances on the surface, and the rich biodiversity surrounding it.
- A Haven for Nature Lovers: The calm, misty environment, combined with the occasional sighting of rare birds, makes this a perfect escape for those looking to connect with nature.
- Refreshing Pools: The crystal-clear pools at the base of the falls tempt visitors to take a dip, but caution is essential—the first pool is nearly 100 feet deep and can be dangerous for swimmers.
Best Time to Visit: Timing is Everything
Kadiyanlena Falls changes with the seasons. I visited in March, during the ideal February–April window, when the waterfall was in full glory and the surroundings were lush and vibrant.
Monsoon seasons (May–July and October–January) can make the terrain slippery and treacherous, making it unsafe for trekking. However, during the dry months, the rocks are easier to navigate, and the waterfall remains a stunning sight to behold.
A Word of Caution: Nature’s Beauty Demands Respect
While Kadiyanlena’s remote charm is what makes it unique, it also means that certain precautions must be taken:
- Slippery Rocks: The rainy season turns the terrain into a risky path—watch your step and wear proper footwear.
- No Guardrails or Facilities: Unlike more developed tourist spots, there are no safety barriers, so extra caution is needed.
- Limited Accommodations: Nawalapitiya offers few places to stay, so most visitors make it a day trip from Kandy or Nuwara Eliya.
- Deep Pools: The first pool at the bottom is extremely deep, and swimming is not advisable.
Final Thoughts: A Hidden Treasure Worth Exploring
As I left Kadiyanlena Ella, I couldn’t help but feel grateful for discovering this unspoiled wonder. Unlike many other waterfalls that have become commercialized, this remains a place where nature is in its purest form. The soft roar of the falls, the emerald greenery, and the misty highland air all combined to make this an unforgettable experience.
For anyone seeking a peaceful escape into nature, Kadiyanlena Falls is a must-visit. It’s not just a waterfall—a place of serenity, adventure, and breathtaking beauty that leaves a lasting impression on anyone fortunate enough to find it.
