About this Attraction

Sri Lanka offers countless breathtaking destinations if you’re a nature enthusiast or an adventure seeker. Kabaragala, nestled within the Dolosbage mountain range, stands out as an untouched paradise. With its Horton Plains-like landscape, stunning viewpoints, and thrilling hiking trails, this mountain is a hidden gem waiting to be explored.

The Beginning of the Adventure – Hiking to Kabaragala

Our journey began at Maryville Junction, a quiet rural area that set the stage for the adventure ahead. The initial part of the trail took us through a serene tea estate, where neatly lined tea bushes spread across rolling hills. As we walked, we passed a small Kovil (Hindu shrine), adding a spiritual touch to the beginning of our trek.

From there, the path gradually narrowed as we entered a pine forest. The air was fresh, filled with the scent of pine needles, and the gentle rustling of trees created a peaceful atmosphere. The hike was not too challenging, though some sections required careful footing. Within an hour, we arrived at the first viewpoint, and what a sight it was!

Standing there, looking over the valleys below, I felt an immense sense of peace. The mesmerizing view offered a panoramic glimpse of the lush greenery and distant mountains. Many hikers choose this spot as their final destination, but the real magic awaits further up.

Reaching the Summit – A Breathtaking Experience

Determined to experience Kabaragala in its full glory, we continued our ascent. The landscape began to resemble Horton Plains, with vast savanna-like grasslands and mana bushes swaying in the wind. As we climbed, the most thrilling sight revealed itself—a steep drop at the mountain’s edge, reminiscent of the famed World’s End.

After about two hours of hiking, we finally reached the summit of Kabaragala Mountain. The 360-degree view was simply surreal—we could see:
Kothmale Reservoir glistening under the sun
The mystical Peacock Hills in the distance
The rolling Dolosbage Range stretching beyond the horizon
The sacred Sri Pada (Adam’s Peak), standing proudly against the sky
The peaceful villages of Gampola and Pusellawa, nestled within the valleys

For photographers, the best time to visit is early morning, when the mist blankets the landscape and the clouds settle between the hills, creating an ethereal, dreamlike view.

Camping Under the Stars – A Night in the Wilderness

One of the most unforgettable experiences at Kabaragala is camping at the summit. After watching the breathtaking sunset, we set up our tents, eager to spend a night amidst nature’s embrace.

The cool mountain breeze surrounded us as night fell, and the sky transformed into a glittering canvas of stars. The silence was only broken by the occasional rustle of leaves and the distant chirping of crickets. Sitting around a small campfire, we gazed at the twinkling city lights in the valleys below, feeling utterly disconnected from the outside world.

If you’re considering camping at Kabaragala, I highly recommend bringing:
Warm clothes – The temperature drops significantly at night.
A sturdy tent – The winds can be strong at the summit.
Plenty of water & snacks – No shops are along the trail.
A flashlight – The descent at dawn can be tricky without one.

Getting There – The Routes to Kabaragala

There are two main routes to reach Kabaragala:
From Nawalapitiya – This route offers scenic tea plantations and is ideal for adventure lovers.
From Gampola – A slightly shorter route that is more convenient for travellers from Kandy.

Distances from key locations:
📍 Colombo – 110 km
📍 Kandy – 40 km
📍 Gampola – 24 km
📍 Nawalapitiya – 20 km

Those using public transport should take a Dolosbage bus from either Gampola or Nawalapitiya. The bus ride takes about an hour, and from the drop-off point, the hiking trail entrance is just a short walk away.
