About this Attraction

Standing amidst the ancient ruins of Anuradhapura, I found myself in front of the majestic Image House of Jethawanarama Monastery—also known as Palimage. This historic site, nestled just west of the Jethawanarama Stupa, is not just another relic of the past but a timeless testament to the grandeur of Sri Lanka’s Buddhist heritage.

The massive stone pillars, the intricately designed lotus pedestal, and the remains of the sacred Buddha image made me feel as though I had stepped back into an era where devotion and architectural brilliance merged seamlessly.

First Impressions: The Grand Entrance

As I approached the Image House, I was instantly struck by the sheer grandeur of its entrance. The eight-meter-high solid stone doorposts stood like ancient sentinels, inviting visitors into a space that once housed a magnificent Buddha statue. The size and craftsmanship of these pillars hinted at the importance of this structure in the monastery complex.

Despite the centuries of erosion, the architectural precision was still visible, showcasing the incredible skill of the ancient Sri Lankan builders.

Exploring the Sacred Interior: A Glimpse into Ancient Worship

Stepping inside, I found the remains of what was once a remarkable stone reliquary (yantragala)—a twenty-five-chamber structure that once enshrined sacred relics. It was awe-inspiring to think that monks and devotees once gathered here, paying homage to these sacred treasures.

The lotus pedestal, still intact, provided a powerful visual of where the Buddha image once sat, radiating peace and divinity. Though the main statue no longer exists, its spiritual energy still lingers—a silent yet powerful reminder of the devotion that once filled this space.

The Architectural Legacy: A Design that Inspired Generations

One of the most fascinating aspects of this Image House is that it follows the vaulted gedige-style architecture, which later influenced similar image houses in Polonnaruwa, including:

Thuparama Image House
Lankatilaka Image House
Tivanka Image House

Standing within the ruins of this pioneering structure, I realized that Jethawanarama’s Image House was not just a place of worship but also a model for Sri Lanka’s Buddhist architectural evolution.

A Journey Through Time: Reflecting on the Experience

Sitting on the ancient stone steps, I took a moment to absorb the surroundings. The whispers of history, the soft rustle of leaves, and the golden afternoon light casting long shadows across the stone walls made me feel deeply connected to the past.

Though time has worn down its walls, the spirit of this place remains intact. The Jethawanarama Image House continues to tell its story to those willing to listen.

For any traveller, history enthusiast, or spiritual seeker, this is more than a site—it is an experience that lingers in the soul.
