About this Attraction

Irohazaka Winding Road (いろは坂, Iroha Slope) is one of Japan's most scenic mountain roads, famously connecting central Nikko to the highland region of Okunikko. Named after the 48 syllables of the old Japanese alphabet, the two roads with 48 hairpin curves are both a thrilling drive and a historical route. The uphill road, constructed in 1965, and the downhill road, built in 1954, are each one-way, offering safety and smoother flow for visitors navigating the dramatic elevation changes.

The route is particularly famous in autumn, when the mountainsides explode into vivid red, yellow, and orange hues. From late October to early November, the entire drive becomes breathtaking through one of Japan's most stunning fall landscapes. Drivers can stop at viewpoints like the Akechidaira Observation Deck, offering panoramic views over the Irohazaka curves, Lake Chuzenji, and distant peaks.

In addition to its natural beauty, Irohazaka offers views of waterfalls, roadside rest areas, and historical significance. It was once a path used by Buddhist monks travelling to Lake Chuzenji and Mount Nantai. The road is open year-round, but winter travel requires caution due to possible ice and snow.

Ideal for photographers, road trippers, and nature lovers, Irohazaka Winding Road combines adrenaline with tranquillity. However, due to heavy congestion,  visitors should aim to go early in the day and avoid weekends in peak season.

Whether chasing foliage, snapping mountain views, or enjoying the curves, Irohazaka offers a journey just as much as the destination.
