Irakkandy Wreck – Trincomalee

About This Accommodation

The Irakkandy Wreck in Trincomalee is one of Sri Lanka’s most captivating and accessible wreck diving sites, offering a unique underwater adventure for both novice and experienced divers. Located just off the coast of the quiet fishing village of Irakkandy, a few kilometers north of Trincomalee, this sunken cargo vessel lies at a relatively shallow depth of around 18–22 meters, making it ideal for recreational diving. Believed to have gone down in the late 20th century, the wreck has since transformed into a thriving artificial reef, drawing an incredible array of marine life. As you descend through the clear turquoise waters—particularly inviting between May and October, the region’s best diving season—you’re greeted by a ghostly silhouette emerging from the sandy seabed. Coral and sponge colonies have colonized the hull and deck, creating shelter for countless species including lionfish, angelfish, batfish, moray eels, and even the occasional turtle or reef shark. Schools of snapper and fusiliers swirl around the mast and cargo holds, while macro photographers can enjoy close-ups of nudibranchs, shrimps, and crabs nestled among the wreck’s crevices.

The structure itself is still relatively intact, with several accessible swim-throughs for divers to explore. You can peer into rusted compartments, glide over fallen beams, and observe how nature has claimed the ship piece by piece. With its calm conditions and manageable depth, the Irakkandy Wreck is often used by local dive centers for wreck specialty courses and underwater photography dives. It’s also a favorite spot for those looking to experience the eerie beauty of a sunken ship without the challenges of deeper or more technical wrecks. Most dive trips to the site are organized by operators based in Nilaveli or Trincomalee, with boat rides taking approximately 20–30 minutes. Dive groups are typically small, ensuring a personalized and safe experience with certified guides who share the story of the wreck and its transformation over time.

Beyond the dive, the surrounding area offers tranquil beaches and a laid-back vibe that complements the underwater serenity. Whether you're checking off your first wreck dive or expanding your underwater horizons, the Irakkandy Wreck provides a stunning blend of history, marine biodiversity, and peaceful diving conditions—making it a must-visit destination on Sri Lanka’s east coast.
