Located along the wild and scenic coastline of Sai Village in Aomori Prefecture's Shimokita Peninsula, Hotokegaura—also known as Buddha's Cove—is one of northern Japan's most extraordinary natural formations. Formed nearly 20 million years ago by intense deep-sea volcanic activity, the coastline's green volcanic tuff cliffs were slowly carved by the relentless waves of the Tsugaru Channel into a dramatic series of uniquely shaped rock pillars, spires, and arches. Stretching for approximately 2 kilometers (1.2 miles), the formation's spiritual appearance led to the naming of many of the rocks after Buddhist deities, giving the location its sacred identity. The area, with its spiritual significance, is a must-visit for those interested in Japanese culture and spirituality.

In 1934, a portion of the Hotokegaura coast was designated as an Aomori Natural Monument, and by 1941, it received national recognition as a Place of Scenic Beauty and a National Natural Monument. One of the highlights of the site is a small seaside temple hall known as the Jizodo, dedicated to Jizo Bosatsu, the guardian of travelers and children in Buddhist belief. Every year on July 24, the Hotokegaura Festival is held at this sacred site, attracting visitors and worshippers alike who come to offer prayers and appreciate the spiritual and natural beauty of the area.

Travelers can begin their journey to Hotokegaura from the Tsugaru Channel Cultural Center "Arusasu" in Sai Village, a hub that serves both tourist and local needs. Tourist boats and regular ships to Hotokegaura depart from here, with a scenic 30-minute ride providing stunning views of the sea cliffs. The journey to Sai itself is a picturesque adventure: take the JR Ominato Line to Shimokita Station, then continue by bus to Sai Village, and finally enjoy a boat ride to Hotokegaura. Alternatively, the high-speed Polar Star ship from Aomori Port provides direct access.
