About this Attraction
Hiyare Reservoir, built over 100 years ago, initially served as a vital water supply for Galle town. Its historic significance adds a touch of nostalgia to this serene destination. During my visit, I couldn’t help but marvel at how this reservoir, once an engineering marvel, has transformed into a sanctuary of biodiversity and tranquillity.
Immersing in the Rainforest
Surrounding the reservoir is a stunning secondary lowland rainforest. As I stepped into this lush greenery, I felt a world away from the bustling city. The forest is alive with chirping birds, rustling leaves, and vibrant colours—a sensory overload in the best way. The cool breeze carried the earthy aroma of the rainforest, creating a profoundly calming environment.
Incredible Biodiversity
One of the highlights of my visit was witnessing the astonishing diversity of life in this area. Dragonflies flitted gracefully over the water, and I learned that 55 species are native to this region, with 12 found nowhere else in the world. Butterflies added more colour to the experience, with 78 species identified here, including three endemic to Hiyare. Each step revealed new surprises, from the calls of unseen animals to rare plants peeking through the dense foliage.
A Photographer’s Paradise
The scenic beauty of Hiyare is genuinely captivating. I spent hours capturing the shimmering reflections on the reservoir’s surface, the vivid colours of dragonflies and butterflies, and the intricate patterns of tree roots intertwined with the soil. It’s a dream location for nature photography enthusiasts like me.
What to Bring
I brought essentials like sturdy walking shoes, a hat, sunscreen, and a water bottle to make the most of my trip. Binoculars and a camera were invaluable for spotting and capturing the abundant wildlife.
