About this Attraction

Hibiya Park, Japan’s first Western-style park, offers a peaceful green escape amidst Tokyo’s bustling business district. Opened in 1903 on land once belonging to feudal lords, the nearly 40-acre park blends European landscaping with Japanese traditions. Its serene walking paths, seasonal flower beds, and historic landmarks make it a favourite retreat for locals and tourists alike. At the park’s north end, remnants of Edo Castle’s moat and a guardhouse nestle among the trees, while a decorative horse fountain hints at Tokyo’s pre-automobile era. To the south, the Shisei Kaikan, a Gothic-style building, once served as the Japan State News Agency during World War II. The park’s large central fountain, beautifully illuminated at night, is a focal point for visitors, and nearby lies a traditional Japanese garden featuring a crane-shaped pond fountain and vibrant autumn foliage. Hibiya Park is also home to one of Tokyo’s most beloved ginkgo trees—dubbed the “risky ginkgo”—which was relocated rather than felled during road construction in 1901, thanks to the park’s designer, Seiroku Honda. Seasonal attractions abound: 2,000 chrysanthemums bloom in November, tulip and rose gardens delight in spring, and a morning glory market enlivens early July. Music lovers enjoy open-air concerts in the summer, while various festivals like the Bon and Fishermen’s Festivals add cultural vibrance throughout the year. With its historic charm, floral beauty, and tranquil atmosphere, Hibiya Park remains a timeless symbol of Tokyo’s blend of tradition, resilience, and renewal.
