About this Attraction

Hiking Hawagala was an experience like no other. Tucked away near Belihuloya in the Sabaragamuwa Province, this stunning mountain caught my attention with its promise of breathtaking views and untouched beauty. As I started my journey from Belihuloya town, which is just 4.2 km away, the excitement of discovering this hidden treasure was palpable.

The cool mountain air and the lush greenery set the tone for the adventure ahead. I could already hear the distant sound of waterfalls, hinting at the wonders I was about to witness.

The Challenging Yet Rewarding Trek

The hike to the summit of Hawagala was challenging but worth it. The trail started from the Laduyaya Estate and led through dense forests, steep paths, and rugged terrains. Although the 3 km stretch was demanding, each step brought new sights—from majestic mountains to flowing streams like Belihuloya Oya, which originates from Horton Plains.

Crossing the Belihuloya River, with its crystal-clear waters, was refreshing. The path occasionally revealed stunning panoramic views of the surrounding landscapes, motivating me to keep moving. Along the way, the soothing sounds of Pahanthuduwa Falls added to the trail's charm, making me pause and soak in the natural beauty.

Legends That Add to the Magic

Hawagala isn’t just a mountain—it’s rich with legends that give it a mystical aura. According to local folklore, King Rawana, a mythical figure in Sri Lankan culture, pierced a rabbit on this mountain during his travels. The incident led to the mountain's name, "Ha Gala," which means "Pierced Rock".

Hearing these local stories made the hike feel like a journey through history, where myth and nature intertwine. Not every day do you get to walk paths steeped in such cultural significance.

Reaching the Summit: A View Worth Every Step

The moment I reached the summit was truly magical. Standing at 1330 meters above sea level, I was rewarded with 360-degree panoramic views that took my breath away.

To one side, I could see the shimmering waters of Samanala Wewa, the sprawling Sabaragamuwa University, and the Badulla Road. On the other side, the Horton Plains, Patupavakahinna Kanda, Dorapeliyagala Kanda, and the Lokanthaya and Dethana Gala mountain ranges stretched endlessly into the horizon.

The view felt like being on top of the world, surrounded by a sea of clouds with the lush forests below. The gentle mountain breeze and serene silence made it a perfect place to pause, reflect, and be in the moment.

Camping Under the Stars

Although camping on Hawagala has challenges, mainly due to the rugged terrain, I decided to spend the night at the summit. As night fell, the sky transformed into a canvas dotted with stars, while the cool mountain air made for a perfect camping atmosphere.

Watching the sunrise the following day was an unforgettable experience. How the first rays of light pierced through the misty clouds, illuminating the mountain peaks, felt magical—a sight that made every difficult step of the hike worthwhile.
