About this Attraction

The Hakkōda Ropeway is a year-round aerial tramway that transports visitors into the heart of Aomori Prefecture’s Hakkōda Mountains, offering breathtaking views and access to a variety of seasonal activities. Spanning 2.5 kilometers, the ropeway ascends 650 meters to the Summit Park Station atop Mount Tamoyachidake, providing panoramic vistas of Aomori City, Mutsu Bay, the Tsugaru and Shimokita Peninsulas, and even Mount Iwaki on clear days.

Each season brings its own unique charm to the Hakkōda Ropeway experience. In spring, visitors can enjoy the fresh greenery and blooming alpine flowers from mid-May to mid-August. Autumn transforms the landscape into a tapestry of vibrant reds and golds, particularly from late September to mid-October, attracting hikers and photographers alike.

Winter is perhaps the most dramatic season, as the mountains are blanketed in snow, and the trees become adorned with hoarfrost, creating a surreal, otherworldly landscape. This period, from January to February, is especially popular among skiers and snowboarders who utilize the ropeway to access the Hakkōda Ski Area, known for its extensive backcountry trails and deep powder snow.

The ropeway operates daily, with departures every 20 minutes from 9:00 AM. The last departure varies by season: until 4:20 PM from March to early November, and until 3:40 PM from mid-November to the end of February. Each one-way trip takes approximately 10 minutes, making it a convenient option for both quick sightseeing and as a starting point for longer mountain treks.

For those interested in hiking, the Summit Park Station serves as a gateway to various trails, ranging from short 30-minute walks to more challenging 4-hour climbs. The area is dotted with ponds and marshes, home to a variety of alpine plants, offering nature enthusiasts ample opportunities to explore the unique ecosystem of the Hakkōda Mountains.

Whether you're seeking a serene ride to admire the seasonal landscapes or an adventurous journey into the mountains for hiking or skiing, the Hakkōda Ropeway provides an accessible and memorable experience for all visitors.
