About this Attraction
Visiting Hakgala Botanic Gardens had always been on my must-see list while exploring Nuwara Eliya. When I finally stepped into this lush paradise, I realized it was more enchanting than I had imagined. Tucked away along the Badulla Road, approximately 9.5 km southeast of Nuwara Eliya, the gardens perfectly escaped the bustling city.
The Journey to Hakgala
The journey itself was nothing short of magical. As we left Nuwara Eliya, the cool mountain air grew crisper, and the road meandered through rolling tea plantations. Each bend revealed stunning views of the surrounding hills and valleys.
The sight of Hakgala Rock towering in the distance was intimidating and mesmerizing. Due to its shape, the 2,200-meter-high rock was known as "Elephant's Jaw." It loomed like a silent guardian over the botanic gardens below.
First Impressions: A Wonderland of Greenery
Walking into the gardens, I was immediately struck by the cool, crisp air—a refreshing change from the humid coastal areas of Sri Lanka. With temperatures ranging between 3°C and 15°C, it felt like stepping into a natural air-conditioned wonderland.
The layout of the gardens was intriguing: built on multiple platforms along the lower slopes of Hakgala Rock, the paths led me through diverse floral collections. The contrast between the manicured lawns and the wild greenery of the Hakgala Forest Reserve created a perfect balance between order and nature.
The Botanical Highlights
Rose Garden
The rose garden was my first stop. The air was thick with the sweet fragrance of hundreds of rose varieties. I found myself walking slowly, pausing to admire the delicate petals and vibrant colors—from deep reds to soft pinks and creamy whites.
Standing there, with roses swaying in the gentle breeze, I couldn’t help but feel like I’d stepped into a storybook scene.
Orchid House
The Orchid House was next on my list. As I entered, I was immediately captivated by the intricate beauty of these exotic flowers. Some hung like colourful chandeliers, while others stood proudly, their delicate blooms glowing in the soft sunlight.
The purple, pink, and white orchids seemed almost otherworldly, reminding me of nature's endless creativity. I spent a good 20 minutes here, trying to capture their elegance in photos—but honestly, no picture did them justice.
Fern Garden
The Fern Garden was like stepping into a prehistoric world. The lush green fronds stretched in every direction, some towering above me like miniature trees. The cool, damp air carried the earthy scent of wet soil, enhancing the feeling of being deep in a forest.
As I walked along the path, I imagined how ancient this landscape might be, with these ferns tracing their origins back millions of years.
The Legend of Sita Eliya
Hakgala is not just about botany—it's steeped in mythology, too. According to Ramayana legend, the gardens were part of Ashok Vatika, where Princess Sita was held captive by King Ravana.
I thought about this ancient tale as I stood by the Sita Amman Temple, just a short distance from the gardens. The serene atmosphere and the surrounding forest made it easy to imagine this as a setting for a mythological story.
The Viewpoints: Nature’s Masterpiece
One of the highlights of my visit was reaching the viewpoints overlooking the Uva Valley. From here, I could see the Madulsima and Namunukula mountain ranges in the distance.
The layers of misty mountains stretching across the horizon made me feel like I was standing above the clouds. The sunlight filtering through the mist created a golden glow, painting the landscape in soft hues.
Weather Wonders: Experiencing Sri Lanka’s Alpine Climate
The weather at Hakgala Botanic Gardens was unlike anything I had experienced elsewhere in Sri Lanka. During my visit, the temperature hovered around 10°C, and cool winds swept through the gardens.
I learned that the gardens receive rainfall from two monsoons:
- Southwest Monsoon (May-August)
- Northeast Monsoon (October–December)
Even though it was sunny during my visit, the cool air and occasional mist gave the gardens an alpine feel—a rare sensation in a tropical country like Sri Lanka.
Encounters with Wildlife
Hakgala isn’t just about plants; it’s also home to various wildlife. During my walk, I spotted:
- A purple-faced langur swinging through the canopy.
- Brightly coloured birds, like the Yellow-eared Bulbul.
- A monitor lizard lazily crosses the path.
The presence of these creatures added a dynamic element to the visit, reminding me that the gardens are part of a larger ecosystem connected to the Hanthana Mountain Range.
Moments of Solitude and Reflection
Toward the end of my visit, I found a secluded bench beneath a massive tree. Sitting there, surrounded by flowers, ferns, and birdsong, I realized how rare it is to find such peace.
The cool breeze, the chirping of birds, and the gentle rustling of leaves created a meditative atmosphere. It felt like nature was inviting me to slow down and simply be present.
