About this Attraction
Visiting Gregory Lake in Nuwara Eliya was an experience I won’t forget. Set in the heart of Sri Lanka's "Little England", this picturesque lake combines natural beauty, thrilling water sports, and leisure activities that cater to visitors of all ages. Named after Sir William Gregory in 1873, the lake has become a favourite destination for both locals and tourists, and I was eager to explore everything it had to offer.
First Impressions: The Charm of Lake Gregory
As I approached Gregory Lake, the cool climate of Nuwara Eliya and the mist rolling over the hills created a dreamlike atmosphere. The sparkling waters of the lake, surrounded by lush greenery and charming colonial-era buildings, immediately caught my attention. The calmness of the lake, paired with the bustle of activity around it, made me feel like I was in a place where nature and recreation coexist perfectly.
Water Sports and Fun Activities on the Lake
My first stop was, of course, the water sports section. There’s something for everyone at Gregory Lake, whether you’re looking for adventure or a peaceful ride.
Speed Boating and Jet Skiing
I started with a speed boat ride—the thrill of zipping across the calm waters with the wind in my face was invigorating. The jet skiing options are perfect for those who love an adrenaline rush. Watching the sunlight glisten on the water as we raced across the lake was an unforgettable experience.
Swan Boat Rides
After the excitement of speed boating, I opted for something more relaxing—a swan-shaped pedal boat ride. Pedalling gently across the lake gave me time to soak in the views, with rolling hills in the background and birds gliding just above the water’s surface. It’s an experience I’d recommend to anyone looking for a peaceful escape on the water.
Exploring the Surroundings: Pony Rides and Biking
Beyond the lake, Gregory Park offers plenty of activities. I noticed families enjoying picnics, kids running around, and couples cycling along the bicycle path around the lake.
Pony Rides
One of the more unique experiences was the chance to take a pony ride. Even though I wasn’t sure about it at first, I decided to try it. The gentle pace of the pony allowed me to enjoy the breathtaking scenery while adding a fun and whimsical touch to my visit. It’s an especially great activity for families with kids.
Cycling Around the Lake
I rented a bicycle (for just Rs. 100 per hour) and cycled around the lake. The bike path offered some of the best views, with the lake on one side and well-kept gardens on the other. The cool mountain breeze refreshed the ride, and I loved stopping occasionally to take in the panoramic vistas.
Tasting Local Flavours: Fast Food Stalls and Snacks
After the morning's activities, I headed to the food stalls in a separate section of the park. There was plenty to choose from, from freshly made snacks to fast food. I treated myself to some hot corn, samosas, and a steaming cup of Sri Lankan tea—the perfect way to warm up in Nuwara Eliya’s cool climate.
Relaxing Moments and Birdwatching by the Lake
I decided to slow down in the afternoon and enjoy the peaceful surroundings. The area around Gregory Lake is home to various bird species, making it an excellent spot for birdwatching. I spotted a few kingfishers and herons, adding a lovely wildlife touch to the serene landscape.
For those who love nature photography, Gregory Lake provides endless opportunities. The changing light, cloud reflections on the water, and colourful boats make every angle picture-perfect.
Getting to Gregory Lake: The Scenic Route
One of the highlights of the trip was the journey itself. I took the train from Kandy to Nanu Oya, which is widely considered one of the most scenic train rides in the world. The lush tea plantations, rolling hills, and misty landscapes made the journey an experience in itself.
From Nanu Oya, a short tuk-tuk ride brought me directly to Gregory Lake. A road trip from Colombo (4–5 hours) or Kandy (2–3 hours) is another excellent option for those with more time.
Final Thoughts: A Must-Visit Gem in Nuwara Eliya
My visit to Gregory Lake perfectly blended adventure, relaxation, and natural beauty. Whether racing across the water on a speedboat, cycling around the scenic lake, or simply sitting by the shore watching the sunset, every moment was peaceful and rejuvenating.
Gregory Lake isn’t just a tourist attraction—it’s a place where you can slow down, breathe in the fresh mountain air, and create unforgettable memories. For anyone planning a trip to Nuwara Eliya, I would say don’t miss this stunning spot. It truly captures the essence of Sri Lanka’s hill country charm.
