About this Attraction
Rising 107 meters above Hakodate, Goryokaku Tower is one of Hokkaido’s most iconic landmarks, offering sweeping views over the star-shaped Goryokaku Fort and the vibrant cityscape beyond. Originally built to provide a bird’s-eye view of the unique western-style fortress below, the tower now stands as a symbol of both historic significance and seasonal beauty.
From its twin observation decks at 86 and 90 meters, visitors can enjoy panoramic vistas of the Goryokaku Park, which famously bursts into color each spring when around 1,600 cherry trees bloom in unison. During this time—from late April to early May—the site transforms into one of Japan’s top hanami (cherry blossom viewing) spots, attracting thousands who gather for picnics and photos. In autumn, the foliage shifts to vibrant reds and golds, while winter brings the enchanting Hoshi-no-Yume (Dream of Stars) illumination, where the moat and star shape of the fortress are traced with lights, creating a magical evening spectacle.
Inside the tower, historical exhibitions detail the significance of the Goryokaku Fort—once Japan’s first Western-style fort and the final battlefield of the Boshin War. Visitors can also enjoy a café, souvenir shops, and seasonal displays.
Open year-round, Goryokaku Tower is easily accessible via tram or bus and pairs well with a walk through the adjacent park or a visit to nearby historical sites. Whether you're a history buff, photographer, or simply a traveler seeking scenic beauty, Goryokaku Tower offers a truly unique perspective of Hakodate through every season.
