About this Attraction

The Galle Clock Tower, located at the entrance of the historic Galle Fort, left me truly captivated during my visit. Built-in 1883, this towering structure is a remarkable symbol of Sri Lanka's colonial past and the fusion of European and Sri Lankan architectural styles. Its historical and cultural significance makes it an unmissable part of the Galle Fort experience.

A Glimpse into the Past

As I stood before the Galle Clock Tower, I learned that it was constructed to honour Dr Antonisz, a respected Colonial Surgeon and member of the Legislative Council. The clock, donated by Mudaliyar Samson de Abrew Rajapakse as a gesture of gratitude for Dr. Antonisz's medical care, adds a personal and touching narrative to its history. It's incredible to think how contributions from the community helped erect this iconic structure.

Architectural Marvel

The tower's architecture blends Victorian and Moorish styles, reflecting the influence of the British colonial era. The intricate detailing and ornate embellishments on the tower were a delight. It’s a reminder of how art and functionality were intertwined in colonial architecture.

Why You Should Visit

Visiting the Galle Clock Tower isn’t just about admiring a historical structure—it’s about stepping back in time. Its location at the entrance of Galle Fort makes it a welcoming sight for visitors exploring this UNESCO World Heritage Site. The fort, with its colonial-era buildings, narrow streets, and rich history, is a perfect backdrop for the clock tower, adding to its charm.

The tower has become an iconic landmark, making it a popular photography spot. It’s one of those places where history meets picturesque beauty, and you can almost hear the echoes of the past as you walk through the area.

My Experience Exploring Galle Fort

After admiring the clock tower, I wandered through the cobblestone streets of Galle Fort, marvelling at the colonial buildings and soaking in the serene atmosphere. The fort offers a unique blend of history, architecture, and culture, making it a fascinating destination for anyone interested in Sri Lanka’s heritage.

Final Thoughts

The Galle Clock Tower isn’t just a timekeeping device—it’s a symbol of gratitude, a piece of history, and an architectural gem. Visiting this landmark and the surrounding fort was an enriching experience that I would recommend to anyone exploring the southern coast of Sri Lanka.
