About this Attraction
Fukiware Falls (吹割の滝) is one of Japan’s most breathtaking natural wonders, located in Numata City, Gunma Prefecture. Often referred to as the “Niagara of the East,” this 7-meter-high and 30-meter-wide waterfall plunges into a dramatic, V-shaped gorge carved by centuries of erosion. The unique geological formations, roaring water, and lush surrounding forest make it a magnet for nature lovers, photographers, and hikers alike.
The best times to visit are April–May and late October–early November. In spring, the snowmelt feeds the river, creating an intensely powerful waterfall that echoes through the gorge. The surrounding greenery is fresh and vibrant, adding to the refreshing natural atmosphere. In autumn, the falls become even more picturesque as the forest transforms into a canvas of fiery reds, oranges, and golds—making it one of the top spots in the region for autumn foliage.
Visitors can explore the area via well-maintained riverside trails and enjoy panoramic views from the Ukishima Suspension Bridge. The total walking route takes around 1.5 to 2 hours, making it a perfect half-day excursion. Entry is free, though some parking areas charge a small fee. Do note, however, that the area is closed from mid-December to late March due to heavy snowfall and icy paths.
Fukiware Falls offers a peaceful yet powerful encounter with nature’s beauty, ideal for a scenic getaway from Tokyo. Whether you’re chasing vibrant fall colors or the raw energy of spring water, this hidden gem is a must-visit destination in Gunma.
