About this Attraction

The Dunhinda Waterfall had always been on my travel wishlist. When I finally made the journey to this natural wonder near Badulla, I discovered an experience that was both serene and exhilarating. Known for its misty spray and picturesque surroundings, Dunhinda Falls stands 63 meters tall, creating a symphony of cascading water that left me in awe.

The Journey to Dunhinda

My adventure started with a scenic drive along the Badulla-Mahiyangana road. The journey itself was captivatingwinding roads, misty hills, and lush greenery flanked either side. Every now and then, distant mountains peeked through the mist, adding a touch of mystery to the early morning landscape.

After about 6 km from Badulla town, I reached Dunhinda Junction. A signboard and a small gate marked the beginning of the trek. From there, the real adventure began.

The Trek to the Waterfall

The footpath to Dunhinda Falls stretched for about 1.5 kilometres. Though the path was well-defined, the terrain was uneven in some places. Moss-covered rocks, exposed tree roots, and gentle slopes reminded me to tread carefully.

The surrounding forest felt like nature’s embrace. Birdsong filled the air, and the occasional rustle of leaves hinted at hidden wildlife. As I moved further, the cool breeze carried the faint sound of rushing water, heightening my anticipation.

A Pleasant Surprise: Punchi Dunhinda

About halfway through the trek, I encountered Punchi Dunhinda, or the "Little Dunhinda." Though not as grand as its larger counterpart, this smaller waterfall had a charm of its own. The water cascaded gently over mossy rocks, and the misty veil added a dreamlike quality.

I paused here for a few minutes, soaking in the peaceful atmosphere. The sound of flowing water combined with the forest’s stillness created a perfect moment of tranquillity.

The Final Stretch

The second half of the trek became slightly steeper, but the sound of the waterfall grew louder with every step. Excitement built as I saw glimpses of mist rising above the trees.

As I approached the viewing platform, the cool mist hit my face—an invigorating welcome from the majestic Dunhinda Falls.

The Grand Reveal: Dunhinda Falls

Finally, I stood before the magnificent Dunhinda Waterfall. The 63-meter cascade poured over the rock face with immense force, crashing into the pool below with a resounding roar.

The misty spray, from which the waterfall gets its name ("Dunhinda" means "misty spray" in Sinhala), danced in the sunlight, creating tiny rainbows that glimmered through the haze.

The scene was mesmerizing:

  • The waterfall, like a silver ribbon, unravelling from the heights.
  • The mist swirled around the base like a soft, white cloud.
  • The dense forest backdrop, with its shades of green contrasting the brilliant white of the water.

I stood there, speechless, as the raw beauty of nature unfolded before me.

The Sound and Feel of Nature

The thunderous sound of the falling water was both soothing and humbling. The cool mist on my skin felt like nature’s refreshment after the warm, slightly humid trek.

Closing my eyes, I listened to the water's endless rhythm and felt a deep sense of peace. Nature’s simplicity had once again proven its profound impact.

Meeting the Monkeys

As I prepared to leave, a group of monkeys appeared near the viewing platform. Their curious eyes followed me as I reached for my water bottle. I remembered the advice from locals not to hold snacks or food items openly—these mischievous creatures are known to snatch unattended treats.

The monkeys were an amusing distraction as I watched their antics from a safe distance.

The Return Trek: A Different Perspective

The trek back to Dunhinda Junction felt more manageable now that the main goal was achieved. The sunlight filtering through the canopy revealed hidden details I’d missed on the way uptiny wildflowers, vines twisting around tree trunks, and the occasional butterfly fluttering past.

I stopped at a small vendor's stall along the path and enjoyed a hot cup of ginger tea. The warm drink complemented the crisp mountain air perfectly.
