Dive in SS Sea Gull Shipwreck | Maldives
About This Activity
The SS Sea Gull is one of the oldest recorded shipwrecks in the Maldives, dating back to 1879. This British steam-powered vessel was navigating through the Maldivian waters when it met its unfortunate fate. While the exact details surrounding the wreck remain in mystery, historical records indicate that it was a 1,012-ton steamer that wrecked along the treacherous Gaafaru Atoll. At the time, the region was a busy trade route, yet also infamous for its unpredictable underwater terrain, strong currents, and coral reefs that claimed many ships over the years.
The ship, which carried a crew of 32 men and three passengers, sank suddenly, with only scattered parts of its structure still visible today. Over the decades, it has been slowly absorbed into the marine ecosystem, making it a fascinating site for divers looking to uncover a piece of maritime history.
Diving Experience
- Depth: Various depths; key sections found around 30 meters
- Location: Gaafaru Atoll, North Malé Atoll
- Best For: Advanced wreck divers, underwater historians, and adventure seekers
- Diving Conditions: Moderate to strong currents, best dived during calm sea conditions
Diving at the SS Sea Gull is like stepping back in time. The skeletal remains of the ship are scattered across the reef, with parts of the iron framework, rusted beams, and corroded engine components still distinguishable. Despite being eroded over the years, certain sections of the ship are still recognizable, offering a glimpse into its past grandeur.
One of the highlights of this dive is the hidden cave located at 30 meters. This small cave formation is often included in diving expeditions, as it provides a thrilling addition to the wreck experience. Within the ship’s structure, divers usually find lionfish, trevallies, and moray eels lurking among the wreckage. The ship’s remnants have also become a prime habitat for soft corals, sea fans, and sponges, enhancing its eerie yet mesmerizing beauty.
Marine Life Around the Wreck
As the ship continues deteriorating, it has transformed into a rich artificial reef, attracting marine life. Expect to encounter:
- Schools of fusiliers and batfish gliding through the wreckage
- Trevally and barracuda hunting near the open sections of the ship
- Moray eels and stonefish hiding in the crevices
- Stunning soft corals and sponges blanket the rusted remains
