About this Attraction

Nestled amidst the lush hills of Nuwara Eliya District, Devon Falls is a spectacle of nature that I had the privilege to witness during my recent trip to Sri Lanka. Known as the 'Veil of the Valley,' this magnificent waterfall near Talawakele offered me an unforgettable experience of serenity and awe-inspiring beauty.

The Beauty of Devon Falls

From the moment I saw Devon Falls, I was captivated by its elegance. The waterfall cascades gracefully from a height of 97 meters, forming a silver veil against the rugged cliffside. The mist created by the falling water enveloped the surrounding greenery, creating a magical atmosphere that felt almost otherworldly. Named after an English coffee planter, Devon, whose plantation was nearby, the falls blend natural beauty and historical charm.

I spent time soaking in the tranquil surroundings, with rushing water acting as a soothing backdrop. The lush vegetation, combined with the clear blue skies, provided perfect opportunities for photography. It was an experience that reminded me of the raw, unspoiled beauty nature offers.

When to Visit Devon Falls

I visited during March, when the falls were in full flow, thanks to the seasonal rains that replenish Kothmale Oya, the river that feeds the cascade. It was the perfect time to witness the waterfall's full glory, with the water rushing down powerfully, creating a mesmerizing spectacle. February to May is the ideal period to visit Nuwara Eliya, as the region experiences less rainfall, making exploring easier.

Activities Around Devon Falls

My visit to Devon Falls wasn’t limited to just admiring the waterfall. The viewpoints near the Mlesna Tea Center offered the best panoramic views, allowing me to appreciate the falls from different angles. For the adventurous spirit in me, a mini-trek to a closer vantage point added a touch of excitement to the visit.

Nearby, I explored the lush tea plantations that are integral to this region’s charm. Walking through the neatly trimmed tea bushes and learning about tea production was a delightful addition to my day. The aroma of freshly brewed tea from the nearby tea centre perfectly accompanies my visit.

How to Reach Devon Falls

Reaching Devon Falls was an adventure in itself. Starting from Colombo, it took me about 4 hours via the Avissawella-Hatton route, approximately 135 kilometres. The drive was scenic, with winding roads revealing breathtaking views of the hills and valleys.

From Nuwara Eliya, it’s just a 1-hour journey of 30 kilometres, making it an easy and pleasant trip. Right in front of the Mlesna Tea Center, the best viewpoint is easily accessible. To reach the top of the falls, I took a left turn from Dimbula and followed the Dimbula–Nawalapitiya Road for about 700 meters.

A Memorable Visit

Visiting Devon Falls was more than just a sightseeing trip; it was an opportunity to connect with nature and experience the serene beauty of Sri Lanka’s hill country. From the cascading water to the surrounding tea plantations, every moment spent here felt like a chapter out of a storybook. If you’re ever in Nuwara Eliya, I highly recommend making the trip to Devon Falls – a destination that promises tranquillity and breathtaking views in equal measure.
