Devathura Waterfalls | Nuwara Eliya

About this Attraction

As I approached Devathura Waterfalls, nestled in the misty hills of Nuwara Eliya, the air grew cooler, filled with the faint scent of damp earth and wildflowers. The cascading water grew louder with every step, creating a soothing rhythm against chirping birds and rustling leaves. Though modest in height—standing at just 10 meters—the waterfall’s beauty was ordinary. Its delicate streams, cascading gracefully over moss-covered rocks, looked like nature’s silver ribbon unfurling amidst emerald greenery.

The Journey to Devathura Falls

The drive along the Peradeniya – Badulla – Chenkaladi Highway was breathtaking. Winding roads hugged the hillsides, offering panoramic views of tea plantations, mist-kissed valleys, and distant waterfalls peeking through the lush foliage. Just when I thought the scenery couldn’t get any better, a sudden turn revealed a glimpse of Devathura Falls, its crystal waters shimmering under the soft sunlight.

Passing through Ramboda Pass, the old Nuwara-Eliya road caught my eye. This narrow, almost hidden path whispered travellers' tales from a bygone era before the Ramboda Tunnel was built. It was surreal to imagine carts and early vehicles navigating these rugged terrains.

The Waterfall’s Enchanting Beauty

Unlike towering waterfalls that roar with power, Devathura Falls exuded a serene charm. The waterfall unfolds in three gentle cascades, with the lowest cascade visible from the roadside, making it an easy yet rewarding stop for travellers. I stood mesmerized, watching the water glisten as it danced over rocks, creating a soothing mist that felt refreshing on my skin.

While only a tiny portion of the waterfall is visible from the road, that hint of mystery adds to its allure. The hidden cascades above felt like nature’s secret, reserved for those adventurous enough to explore beyond the usual path.

A Touch of History and Tea

The experience was more fascinating when learning about its name—Devathura, once known as Thevathura Falls, meaning “Tea Waterfall.” The waterfall is closely connected to the Peratas Tea Estate and factory perched above. As I sipped on a cup of freshly brewed Ceylon tea nearby, I couldn’t help but think of the pure waters from this significant fall nourishing the lush tea gardens that Sri Lanka is famous for.

The Surrounding Ambience

The area around Devathura Falls felt like a natural sanctuary. Towering trees created a cool canopy, while wild ferns and vibrant moss carpeted the ground. The symphony of birds chirping, the gentle rustle of leaves, and the calming sound of cascading water created an almost meditative atmosphere. It was the perfect spot to pause, breathe deeply, and exist in the moment.

Photography Paradise

For photography enthusiasts like me, Devathura Falls is a hidden gem. The contrast of the white, frothy water against the deep green foliage created stunning visuals. I captured shots from different angles—some highlighting the waterfall’s delicate flow and others focusing on the play of light and shadow through the trees. The mist from the falls added a dreamy effect, making every photo feel magical.

Final Thoughts

Visiting Devathura Waterfalls was more than just a scenic stop; it was an immersive experience—a blend of nature, history, and tranquillity. While it may not boast the grandeur of more enormous waterfalls, its modest charm, rich history, and serene surroundings left an unforgettable impression on me. It’s a reminder that sometimes, the most straightforward places hold the most profound beauty.

If you ever find yourself in Nuwara Eliya, detour to Devathura Falls. Let the mist kiss your face, listen to the melody of the water, and for a brief moment, lose yourself in the quiet magic of this hidden gem.
