Tucked away deep within the dense jungles of Ampara, Buddhangala Monastery is one of Sri Lanka’s most serene and historically rich Buddhist sites. My journey to this sacred sanctuary, located just 7 km from Ampara town, felt like stepping back in time. Surrounded by 1280 acres of untouched wilderness and towering rock formations, the monastery exudes an undeniable spiritual energy.

As I wandered through the ancient monastery grounds, I couldn’t help but marvel at the ruins of the Digamadulla Kingdom, which date back to the 4th century BC. This was once a flourishing Buddhist centre where monks and scholars sought wisdom in seclusion and devotion. The exact origins of the monastery remain a mystery, but many believe it is as old as the kingdom itself.
A Revival Against All Odds
For centuries, Buddhangala lay forgotten and overgrown by the jungle, its sacred relics hidden beneath layers of time. However, in 1964, a young and courageous monk, Kalutara Dhammananda Thero, undertook the arduous task of reviving it. His journey, clearing thick jungles and facing untamed wildlife, brought Buddhangala back to life, restoring its spiritual essence.
The Sacred Relics – Unearthing Ancient Treasures
One of the most awe-inspiring discoveries in Buddhangala was the excavation of an ancient stupa, revealing a priceless golden casket. Inside, three delicately crafted golden lotus flowers held relics believed to belong to Sariputta and Maha Moggallana, two of Lord Buddha’s chief disciples. Standing before these relics, I felt an immense sense of reverence and connection to the past.
A Place of Tranquility and Devotion
Today, Buddhangala remains a peaceful retreat for Buddhist monks and devotees. As I sat on one of the massive rock formations, gazing over the lush green expanse below, I understood why this place was chosen for meditation and enlightenment. The only sounds were the rustling trees, distant bird calls, and the occasional chanting of monks—a truly meditative experience.
