Basawakkulama Tank ( Wewa ) | Anuradhapura

  • Lake or Reservoir

About this Attraction

Stepping into Anuradhapura felt like walking into a living museum of ancient legends. According to local lore, King Paduwasdeva, who ruled between 504 and 474 BC, brought Princess Subaddhakacanna from North India. Her arrival, followed by her siblings establishing villages across the land, laid this historic region's cultural and geographical foundation.

Ingenious Engineering: From Abaya Vapi to Basawakkulama Wewa

During my visit, I discovered that the earliest tank in the area was established by Prince Anuradha, marking the beginning of innovative water management in the region. Later, King Pandukabhaya (437–367 BC), the son of Panduvasudeva’s daughter, expanded this tank—originally named Abaya Vapi in honour of his uncles—into what is now known as Basawakkulama Wewa. This reservoir was meticulously designed to collect rainfall near the city, serving practical needs like bathing and sustaining the city’s growth. It was awe-inspiring to see how ancient engineers maximized every drop of rain with such forward-thinking planning.

A Glimpse from the Past: H. Parker’s Insight

While exploring the site, I recalled H. Parker's observations from his 1909 book Ancient Ceylon. His description of Basawakkulama Wewa as a reservoir that remained intact and fully functional for over 1500 years resonated with me. It was a living testament to the enduring quality of ancient Sri Lankan engineering and the persistent ingenuity that has defined this land through millennia.

Modern-Day Relevance and Conservation

Today, Basawakkulama Wewa stretches over 255 acres, still supplying water to Anuradhapura. As I strolled along its banks, I marvelled at how this ancient tank continues to fulfil its role, bridging the past and the present. The ongoing conservation efforts ensure that this vital heritage endures, reminding us of the rich hydro-engineering legacy that not only shaped an ancient civilization but continues to benefit modern life.

Exploring Anuradhapura and Beyond

My journey didn’t end at the reservoir. Anuradhapura is a treasure trove of ancient stupas, monastic complexes, and sacred Bodhi trees. Travelling from Colombo via Kurunegala and Dambulla, I was treated to scenic vistas and numerous cultural landmarks that deepened my appreciation for the island’s historical narrative. Each monument and relic echoed the wisdom and creativity of our ancestors, offering a profound sense of connection to the past.

Final Reflections

Visiting Basawakkulama Wewa was a truly immersive experience—a blend of historical exploration, an engineering marvel, and cultural discovery. It is a vivid reminder of ancient Sri Lanka’s remarkable water management and urban planning achievements. A journey to Anuradhapura is an unforgettable adventure for anyone eager to uncover the secrets of the past while enjoying the beauty of the present.
