During my recent travels through Sri Lanka’s central hills, I stumbled upon a place rich in history and surrounded by natural beauty—Balana Fort. Perched at an elevation of 2,000 feet above sea level, this ancient fortress isn’t as widely known as some other historical sites, but that made it even more special for me.

I had always been fascinated by stories of the Kandyan Kingdom and their incredible resistance against foreign invaders. So, when I learned that Balana Fort played a crucial role in defending the kingdom, I knew I had to see it for myself.

The Journey to Balana Fort: A Walk Through History

Getting to Balana Fort was an adventure in itself. After travelling along the main road that leads to the Balana Pass, I had to diverge onto a smaller by-road. From there, a 500-meter trek through a tea estate awaited me.

The trek, though short, felt like a walk back in time. The path wound its way through lush tea plantations, with the scent of fresh tea leaves filling the air. The cool breeze and birdsong made the walk incredibly peaceful. With every step, I imagined the soldiers and messengers who would have once taken this same path, preparing to defend the Kandyan Kingdom.

First Impressions of Balana Fort

Reaching the fort, I was greeted by what remains of this ancient stronghold—mainly its granite foundation. Though much of the original structure has faded with time, the foundation’s sheer robustness reminded me of the architectural brilliance of that era.

The fort’s square shape, perfectly aligned with the hill's steep slope, hinted at the strategic thinking behind its design. Each of the four corners once held circular-shaped bastions, crucial for defensive manoeuvres. I could imagine how archers and soldiers used these vantage points to fend off invaders.

What fascinated me most was how strategically placed the fort was. From this elevated point, the views were simply breathtaking. The Bathalagala mountain range, the Oorakanda mountain, and the majestic Devanagala rock stretched before me.

It wasn’t hard to see why this location was chosen. The commanding view of the surrounding landscape would have been essential for surveillance and defence. I stood there for a while, gazing at the mountains and valleys, thinking about how the soldiers would have kept a watchful eye for advancing forces.

Even in its ruined state, the fort’s design spoke volumes. The granite foundation was incredibly well-preserved, showcasing the durability and skill of ancient Sri Lankan builders.

I found the bastions at each corner particularly fascinating. These circular structures would have provided 360-degree defensive coverage, making it difficult for enemies to approach unnoticed. The square alignment with the hill’s slope further emphasized the strategic nature of the fort’s construction.

It amazed me how such thoughtful architecture had survived for centuries. Even though the fort now lies in ruins, the stories of valour and strategy in its stones remain alive.

Standing at the top of Balana Fort, I was rewarded with some of the most spectacular views I’ve seen in Sri Lanka. The landscape seemed to stretch endlessly, with mountains piercing the sky and valleys blanketed in green.

The sight of the Devanagala rock was particularly striking. It stood tall and proud in the distance, much like how the Kandyan warriors must have stood when defending their kingdom. The entire view was almost mystical, especially with the mist slowly rolling over the hills.

I sat there for a while, taking it all in. The serenity of the surroundings, combined with the historical weight of the place, made it a moment I’ll never forget.
