About this Attraction
Asamushi Aquarium, located in Aomori Prefecture, Japan, is the northernmost aquarium on Honshu Island and the largest in the Tohoku region. Overlooking Mutsu Bay, it houses approximately 11,000 marine animals, representing over 500 species from both local waters and around the world .
Established in 1924 by the Department of Biology at Tohoku Imperial University, the aquarium was initially a research facility. It opened to the public in 1924 and became a prefectural institution in 1983 .
A standout feature is the 15-meter-long underwater viewing tunnel in the large saltwater tank, allowing visitors to walk through and feel as if they are submerged among the fish .
The aquarium offers year-round dolphin shows, featuring performances inspired by Aomori’s famous Nebuta Festival. Dolphins leap to traditional music played on samisen and flutes, providing a unique and exhilarating experience .
Other exhibits include the Marine Animal Hall (Kaijukan), where visitors can observe sea lions, penguins, and seals up close, and a Petting Area where they can touch various marine animals .
The aquarium is located near Asamushi Onsen, a hot spring resort offering scenic views of Mutsu Bay, making it a popular destination for both marine life enthusiasts and those seeking relaxation .
