About this Attraction

During my recent trip to Anuradhapura, Sri Lanka's first capital, I was captivated by its rich historical legacy. This ancient city, over 2,200 years old, once thrived as a centre of politics, religion, and trade. As I explored its many ruins and archaeological sites, I realized how well-connected the city must have been, thanks to its advanced road network that linked Anuradhapura to major regions like Trincomalee, Mannar, and Jaffna.

The Ancient Road Network

Walking through the remains of the ancient roads, I could imagine the hustle and bustle of trade and cultural exchanges that took place centuries ago. These roads were more than just pathways—they were lifelines facilitating the movement of goods and people. Learning that carts carrying merchandise and travellers once traversed these roads brought the past vividly to life.

Importance of Stone Bridges

The highlight of my visit was discovering the stone bridges, locally known as Gal Palama, constructed during the Anuradhapura Era. These bridges were marvels of ancient engineering, built with granite slabs and supported by stone pillars. They played a crucial role in connecting regions and ensuring smooth transportation across rivers and canals.

Exploring Gal Palama

One of the most remarkable stone bridges I visited was Gal Palama, located near Perimiyankulama and close to the famous Kuttam Pokuna, or Twin Ponds. The journey to this historical site was scenic, with lush paddy fields stretching as far as the eye could see.

Though only part of the bridge remains today, its grandeur and craftsmanship were evident. The structure consisted of large stone slabs laid across three rows of stone pillars, showcasing the ingenuity of ancient builders. Standing on this bridge, I could feel the weight of history beneath my feet, imagining the traders and travellers who once crossed it.

Restoration Efforts

I was heartened to see that efforts had been made to conserve Gal Palama. While restoration work was halted in 2001, the bridge remains well-preserved, allowing visitors like me to witness its ancient splendour. It served as a reminder of the importance of preserving such cultural treasures for future generations.

Historical Significance

Learning about Gal Palama’s historical significance added depth to my experience. The bridge wasn’t just a structure—it was a testament to the advanced construction techniques and engineering skills of ancient Sri Lanka. It symbolized a civilisation's thriving trade and cultural exchanges that valued connectivity and innovation.

Reflections on My Visit

Visiting the Ancient Malwathu Oya Stone Bridge was a humbling experience. It connected me to a time when Anuradhapura was a beacon of progress and prosperity. Exploring the bridge and its surroundings, I gained a deeper appreciation for the ingenuity and dedication of the people who built these enduring monuments.

Anyone visiting Anuradhapura should take the time to explore Gal Palama. It’s not just a piece of history—it’s a journey into the heart of Sri Lanka’s ancient heritage, where every stone has a story.
