About this Attraction

The Akita Kanto Festival, held annually in Akita City from August 3rd to 6th, is one of Japan’s most spectacular and unique summer festivals. It is celebrated for its dazzling skill, balance, and traditional display. The word "Kanto" refers to the tall bamboo poles adorned with dozens of paper lanterns hoisted high to resemble ears of rice, symbolising prayers for a bountiful harvest. These poles can reach up to 12 meters in height and weigh as much as 50 kilograms, each carrying up to 46 glowing lanterns. The heart of the festival lies in the incredible performances of the sashite, or pole handlers, who balance the heavy kanto on their palms, foreheads, shoulders, and lower backs while navigating the streets, guided by the rhythm of flutes, drums, and chanting crowds.

Held during the height of summer, the festival transforms the city into a glowing wonderland, especially at night when more than 250 kanto illuminate the streets with warm, golden light. Spectators line the main thoroughfares, cheering on the performers and capturing the dramatic moments when a kanto sways and is caught just in time. Alongside the main event, the festival includes traditional music performances, local food stalls, and cultural exhibitions that showcase Akita’s rich heritage. The Akita Kanto Festival not only demonstrates physical prowess and coordination but also fosters a strong sense of community and respect for tradition, making it an unforgettable experience for locals and visitors worldwide.
