About this Attraction

Nestled in the serene Nuwara Eliya District, the majestic Aberdeen Waterfall is a natural masterpiece that amazed me. Towering at an impressive height of 98 meters (322 ft), this stunning cascade tumbles gracefully down the Kehelgamu Oya, a tributary of the iconic Kelani River. My visit to this breathtaking waterfall became one of the most memorable experiences of my journey through Sri Lanka's lush landscapes.

A Scenic Journey to Aberdeen Waterfall

The adventure began in Ginigathhena, where the road leading to the waterfall was a feast for the eyes. Following Ambatale Road, I reached the starting point near the Buddha Statue. From there, it was a 1.2 km scenic walk filled with the sights and sounds of nature. The trail led through lush greenery, offering glimpses of the enchanting surroundings that heightened the anticipation of reaching the waterfall.

Captivated by Nature's Masterpiece

As I approached Aberdeen Waterfall, cascading water grew louder, heralding the grandeur ahead. Standing before the waterfall, I was mesmerized by its sheer beauty and power. The water flowed with elegance, creating a serene pool at its base. While tempting, the pool's allure was accompanied by cautionary signs, as its depths have proven hazardous for swimmers. Instead, I soaked in the view, captivated by the waterfall's pristine charm.

Walking Behind the Waterfall

One of the most unique and exhilarating features of Aberdeen Waterfall is the opportunity to walk behind the cascading water. The rock formations at its base form a natural pathway, allowing visitors to experience the waterfall from within. As I ventured behind the curtain of water, I felt awe at nature's raw power. The view from this angle was nothing short of magical, making me appreciate the intricate beauty of this natural wonder.

A Touch of History

Aberdeen Waterfall's name carries a historical connection that adds to its mystique. Named after a gentleman from Aberdeen, Scotland, who had ties to the nearby Aberdeen tea estate, the waterfall reflects colonial history interwoven with Sri Lanka's rich cultural tapestry.

Best Time to Visit

Timing is everything when visiting Aberdeen Waterfall. I chose to explore it during the ideal months of September to December when the monsoons bless the region with lush greenery and a fuller cascade. The vibrant surroundings and the waterfall's majesty created a picture-perfect setting that felt like stepping into a postcard.

A Memorable Experience

The journey from Ginigathhena to Aberdeen Waterfall took about 45 minutes and was as enchanting as the destination itself. The scenic drive and the short trek to the waterfall made the experience all the more rewarding. From the towering cascade to the lush landscape and the unique opportunity to walk behind the waterfall, every moment at Aberdeen Waterfall celebrated nature's splendour.

Aberdeen Waterfall is more than just a sight to behold—it's an experience that connects you with the raw, unfiltered beauty of Sri Lanka's wilderness. For anyone seeking an unforgettable adventure in the heart of nature, this waterfall is a destination that promises wonder and inspiration.
