New Train Services to Boost Tourism in Sri Lanka

According to a news release by Sri Lanka Railway General Manager J.I.D. Jayasundara to the National News Department on 24th January 2025, and following an advisory from Hon. Bimal Rathnayake, Minister of Transport, Highways, Ports, and Civil Aviation, new train services have been announced to enhance tourism in Sri Lanka.

1. Colombo Fort Station to Kankasanthurai

The new train service from Colombo Fort Station to Kankasanthurai is set to revolutionize travel between Sri Lanka’s bustling capital and the serene northern coastal town of Kankasanthurai. This overnight service is designed to provide a comfortable and efficient journey for both local commuters and international tourists, offering a unique opportunity to experience the scenic beauty of Sri Lanka’s northern region.

With departures from Colombo at 8:00 PM, passengers can enjoy a peaceful night journey, arriving in Kankasanthurai by 4:35 AM, just in time to witness the breathtaking sunrise over the northern coastline. The return journey departs Kankasanthurai at 8:00 PM, allowing travellers to explore the town’s rich cultural heritage, pristine beaches, and historical sites before returning to Colombo, arriving by 4:40 AM.

This service is expected to significantly boost tourism in northern Sri Lanka, providing easy access to popular destinations such as JaffnaPoint Pedro, and the Kankasanthurai Harbour. It also supports economic development by improving connectivity for local businesses and trade. The route is ideal for adventure seekershistory enthusiasts, and nature lovers, offering a seamless travel experience that combines convenience with the charm of Sri Lanka’s diverse landscapes.

  • Schedule:

    • Departure from Colombo Fort Station at 8:00 PM, arriving at Kankasanthurai at 4:35 AM.

    • Departure from Kankasanthurai at 8:00 PM, arriving at Colombo Fort Station at 4:40 AM.

2. Hill Country New Train Services

The Hill Country New Train Services introduce a series of scenic and convenient rail routes designed to enhance travel experiences in Sri Lanka’s picturesque Central Highlands. These services cater to residents and international tourists, offering unparalleled access to the island’s most stunning landscapes, including lush tea plantations, misty mountains, and charming hill country towns.

a. Ella Odyssey – Colombo

  • Start Date: 10th February 2025

  • Schedule:

    • Monday: Departure from Colombo Fort Station at 5:30 AM, arriving at Badulla.

    • Tuesday: Departure from Badulla at 5:30 AM, arriving at Colombo Fort Station.

This route connects Sri Lanka’s vibrant capital with Badulla’s tranquil hill country town. It is known for its cool climate, scenic beauty, and proximity to attractions like Dunhinda Falls and Bogoda Wooden Bridge. The early morning departures ensure travellers can make the most of their day exploring the region’s natural and cultural treasures.

b. Ella Odyssey – Kandy

  • Start Date: 1st February 2025 (Weekends Only)

  • Schedule:

    • Departure from Kandy at 9:45 AM, arriving at Demodara at 5:22 PM.

    • Departure from Demodara at 6:00 PM, arriving at Kandy at 12:05 AM.

This weekend-only service is perfect for weekend getaways, offering a leisurely journey through the heart of Sri Lanka’s hill country. Kandy, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is renowned for its Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic and vibrant cultural festivals. At the same time, Demodara is famous for its iconic Nine Arch Bridge and breathtaking views. This route is ideal for photography enthusiastsnature lovers, and cultural explorers.

c. Ella Odyssey – Nanuoya

  • Start Date: 10th February 2025

  • Schedule:

    • Note: The train will not run on Mondays from Badulla to Nanuoya and Tuesdays from Nanuoya to Badulla.

    • Departure from Nanuoya at 8:10 AM, arriving at Badulla at 11:36 AM.

    • Departure from Badulla at 1:00 PM, arriving at Nanuoya at 5:17 PM.

This service connects Nanuoya, the gateway to Nuwara Eliya (also known as “Little England”), with Badulla, offering travellers a chance to explore the region’s tea estateswaterfalls, and colonial-era architecture. The route is particularly popular among tourists seeking to experience Sri Lanka’s hill country’s cool climate and scenic beauty.

These new services aim to provide better connectivity and enhance the travel experience for locals and tourists, thereby boosting tourism in Sri Lanka.
