About this Attraction

Tucked into the mountains of Gifu Prefecture, Gujo Hachiman (郡上八幡) is a charming riverside town celebrated for its crystal-clear waterways, centuries-old traditions, and Japan’s most spirited summer dance festival. Established in the 16th century around Hachiman Castle, the town still retains its Edo-period charm, with narrow streets, quaint wooden houses, and an atmosphere that feels like stepping back in time. Gujo is especially famous for its historic canal system, which continues to function much as it did in the 1600s. Locals use the canals to wash rice and vegetables, and community cooperation keeps the water fresh and clean, earning the town a reputation for having some of the purest drinking water in Japan.

The heart of Gujo Hachiman’s cultural identity is the Gujo Odori, a vibrant summer dance festival that dates back over 400 years. Held across 31 nights between July and September, it reaches its peak during the Obon period in mid-August, when the town bursts into life with all-night dancing, traditional music, and colorful yukata-clad crowds. Visitors are not just spectators—they’re invited to join the circle and dance along, making it one of the most inclusive and joyful festivals in the country.

Adding a quirky twist to its heritage, Gujo Hachiman is also Japan’s food replica capital. The town is a hub for plastic and wax food samples seen in restaurant windows nationwide. Several workshops offer hands-on experiences where visitors can craft realistic-looking wax tempura, sushi, and sweets—perfect for fun souvenirs and unforgettable memories.

Whether you come for the festival, the peaceful waterways, or the artistic flair, Gujo Hachiman offers a unique blend of nature, tradition, and creativity that few other places in Japan can match.
