About this Attraction

Located in Fukuoka Prefecture, Munakata Taisha is one of Japan’s oldest and most sacred Shinto shrine complexes, dedicated to the three Munakata goddesses — daughters of the sun deity Amaterasu. Recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, this powerful spiritual destination holds deep historical and cultural significance, having been a centre of worship for seafarers and pilgrims for centuries.

The shrine complex consists of three main shrines: Hetsu-gu on the mainland, Nakatsu-gu on Oshima Island, and Okitsu-gu on the remote Okinoshima Island, which is considered so sacred that women are not allowed to set foot on it. Okinoshima remains untouched and mysterious, preserving thousands of ancient offerings and archaeological relics that provide a glimpse into ancient Japanese rituals.

At Hetsu-gu, visitors can admire traditional shrine architecture, walk along serene pathways, and explore the Shinpokan Treasure Hall, which houses thousands of historical artefacts retrieved from Okinoshima. The surrounding cedar forest and sacred atmosphere offer a tranquil experience unlike any other.

A visit to Munakata Taisha is more than just sightseeing — it's a journey into Japan’s deep spiritual roots. Whether you're a history enthusiast, a cultural explorer, or someone seeking peace and reflection, Munakata Taisha welcomes all with its timeless beauty and spiritual significance.

Located just over an hour from central Fukuoka by car or train and ferry, it’s an ideal day trip destination in northern Kyushu. Don’t miss this rare opportunity to connect with Japan’s ancient past at one of its most sacred Shinto sites.
