About this Attraction

Nagoya Castle (名古屋城, Nagoyajō) stands as a historic and cultural icon in central Japan, symbolizing the power and prestige of the Tokugawa shogunate during the Edo Period (1603–1868). Constructed in the early 17th century, the castle served as the seat of the Owari branch, one of the three main families of the Tokugawa clan. As such, it was one of the largest and most important castles in Japan. The thriving castle town that developed around it eventually grew into Nagoya, now Japan’s fourth-largest city.

Although much of the original structure, including the elegant castle keep and palace buildings, was tragically destroyed during World War II air raids in 1945, the site remains a powerful symbol of Nagoya’s historical significance. In 1959, the main keep was reconstructed using ferro-concrete and was opened to the public as a museum showcasing artifacts, models, and the history of the castle. However, this modern keep was closed in May 2018, with ongoing plans for a more accurate wooden reconstruction in line with its original architectural design.

Today, visitors can still enjoy the majestic castle grounds, which include two concentric moats, beautifully preserved stone walls, and traditional corner turrets that echo the castle's original scale. The expansive park surrounding the castle is a popular recreational area, particularly during cherry blossom season in late March to early April, when the area transforms into a spectacular hanami (flower viewing) spot. With its historical depth, scenic beauty, and cultural importance, Nagoya Castle remains a must-visit destination for anyone seeking to connect with Japan’s feudal past while enjoying the serenity of a modern urban park.
