About this Attraction

The Mozu Tombs, also known as the Mozu-Furuichi Kofungun, are a remarkable collection of ancient burial mounds located in Sakai City, Osaka. Recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, these kofun date back to the 4th to 6th centuries AD and are among the largest and most significant in Japan. The largest mound, the Daisenryo Kofun, is traditionally believed to be the tomb of Emperor Nintoku and is one of the biggest keyhole-shaped burial mounds in the world, measuring approximately 486 meters in length.

These burial mounds serve as powerful symbols of the early Japanese state, reflecting the political and cultural complexity of the Kofun period. While the tombs themselves are not open to the public, visitors can explore the expansive parklands surrounding the mounds, which provide peaceful walking paths amid lush greenery. From designated observation points, you can appreciate the distinctive keyhole shape and vast scale of these ancient monuments.

The Mozu Tombs are complemented by informative museums such as the Sakai City Museum, which offers detailed exhibits on the history, archaeology, and significance of the kofun. Visiting during the spring or autumn seasons enhances the experience, with pleasant weather and beautiful natural scenery.

Whether you are a history enthusiast, archaeology buff, or simply seeking a unique cultural experience in Osaka, the Mozu Tombs provide a fascinating window into Japan’s ancient past. The site offers a tranquil and reflective atmosphere, far removed from the bustle of the city, making it a rewarding destination for those interested in Japan’s rich heritage.
