About this Attraction
Located just a short walk from Nara Park, Kofukuji Temple (興福寺) is one of Japan’s most historically significant Buddhist temples and a prominent symbol of the Nara period. Established in 669 by the powerful Fujiwara clan, the temple once stood at the centre of political and religious life in Japan. Today, it remains a UNESCO World Heritage Site and continues to captivate visitors with its architectural beauty, cultural significance, and spiritual atmosphere.
Kofukuji’s iconic five-story pagoda, initially built in 730 and reconstructed several times, is Japan’s second-tallest and most photographed pagoda. It serves as a timeless beacon of Nara’s skyline. Nearby, the three-story pagoda, octagonal Nan’endo Hall, and other historic structures reveal the artistic brilliance of early Japanese Buddhism.
The temple’s crown jewel is the Kofukuji National Treasure Museum, which houses an extraordinary collection of Buddhist statues and relics. Among them, the Ashura statue—a striking 8th-century figure with six arms and a serene expression—is one of Japanese religious art's most beloved and celebrated works.
Despite being partially destroyed and rebuilt over the centuries, Kofukuji continues to reflect the grandeur of its past. Ongoing restoration efforts have brought back essential structures such as the Central Golden Hall (Chukondo), which reopened in 2018 and offers more profound insight into the temple’s religious practices.
Surrounded by nature and sacred deer, Kofukuji's peaceful ambience makes it a favourite spot for quiet reflection, spiritual exploration, and cultural appreciation. Whether you’re drawn to its historical legacy, religious importance, or stunning sculptures, Kofukuji Temple offers a compelling journey through Japan’s Buddhist heritage.
Visiting here is not just about admiring ancient architecture—it’s about stepping into a living history that inspires faith and awe after more than a millennium.
